Ligety wins second gold at championships
Skiing: American Ted Ligety already has two gold medals at the world championships, and he hasn’t even skied his best event yet.
Ligety won the super-combined title Monday with a superb downhill and an equally impressive night slalom run under the lights on the icy Planai course in Schladming, Austria, for a two-run time of 2 minutes, 56.96 seconds.
Ivica Kostelic of Croatia finished second, a distant 1.15 seconds behind.
Ligety won the super-G that opened the championships. He’ll be the overwhelming favorite for a third gold in Friday’s grand slalom.
Mullens, Bobcats end Celtics’ win streak
NBA: Byron Mullens had 25 points and 18 rebounds, and the host Charlotte Bobcats defeated Boston 94-91 to snap the Celtics’ seven-game winning streak.
Kevin Garnett had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Celtics, but missed a key 18-footer that would have given Boston the lead late in the game.
• Short-handed Spurs beat Bulls: Kawhi Leonard had a career-high 26 points and Danny Green scored 18, helping the short-handed San Antonio Spurs beat the Chicago Bulls 103-89 in Chicago.
Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili were all out with injuries, and swingman Stephen Jackson also missed the game due to “personal business,” according to the team.
• Nets rally late against Pacers: Brook Lopez scored 25 points and Brooklyn opened overtime on a 9-3 run to pull away from Indiana 89-84 in Indianapolis.
The Pacers appeared to swing the game with a 7-0 run that gave them a 76-72 lead with 1:38 left in regulation.
But Brooklyn scored the final four points to force overtime and started fast in the extra period to put away the game.
• Smith has double-double as Hawks hold off Mavs: Josh Smith had 26 points and 13 rebounds, Devin Harris made a key steal in the final minute and the visiting Atlanta Hawks beat the Dallas Mavericks 105-101.
Al Horford had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Jeff Teague scored 20 points to help the Hawks win.
No. 14 Jayhawks rout No. 10 Kansas State
College Basketball: Ben McLemore scored 30 points on his 20th birthday, Jeff Withey dominated in the paint and No. 14 Kansas routed No. 10 Kansas State 83-62 in Lawrence, Kan., to snap a maddening three-game skid and forge a tie for first in the Big 12.
Withey had 17 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, giving him 263 for his career.
• Georgetown tops Marquette: Otto Porter scored 11 of his 21 points after a momentum-shifting technical foul on Marquette coach Buzz Williams, and No. 15 Georgetown beat the 18th-ranked Golden Eagles 63-55 in Washington.
Georgetown scored 24 points off Marquette’s 19 turnovers.
• Notre Dame women get 18th straight win: Natalie Achonwa had 22 points and 12 rebounds, Skylar Diggins added 21 points and seven assists and second-ranked Notre Dame routed No. 10 Louisville 93-64 in South Bend, Ind., the 18th straight victory for the Fighting Irish.
• Gray leads Duke women: Chelsea Gray scored a career-high 28 points to lead No. 5 Duke past seventh-ranked Maryland 71-56 in Durham, N.C.
Semin nets 200th career goal in win
NHL: Alexander Semin netted his 200th NHL goal and Jiri Tlusty scored twice and had two assists for the Carolina Hurricanes, who scored four third-period goals and overcame three deficits and a poor night of penalty-killing to send the New York Islanders to their fifth straight loss, 6-4 in Uniondale, N.Y.
Carolina tied it 3-3 just 30 seconds into the third when Semin fed a pass to Tlusty for his first goal.
• Maple Leafs surge past Flyers: Colton Orr and Matt Frattin scored goals 28 seconds apart in the second period and the Toronto Maple Leafs earned a 5-2 win on its home ice over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Dion Phaneuf, Clarke MacArthur and James van Riemsdyk also scored for Toronto.
But the win came at a cost. James Reimer stopped 12 shots before being replaced by Ben Scrivens early in the second period with what appeared to be a left leg injury.
• Blue Jackets wallop Sharks: Brandon Dubinsky had a goal and an assist and the Columbus Blue Jackets had their biggest offensive output of the season against the NHL’s stingiest defense in a 6-2 victory over the visiting San Jose Sharks.
Boston College wins another Beanpot
College Hockey: Johnny Gaudreau scored twice and Parker Milner stopped 20 shots to lead No. 4 Boston College to a 6-3 victory over Northeastern in Boston, and give the Eagles their fourth consecutive Beanpot title.
Already the defending national champions – BC has won three of the last five NCAA titles – this class of seniors is the first in school history to go unbeaten in the annual tournament for college hockey bragging rights in Boston.
• Harvard beats Boston U in consolation: Luke Greiner had a hat trick to lead Harvard to a 7-4 victory over No. 13 Boston University in the Beanpot consolation game.
Peter Traber stopped 43 shots for Harvard.
• Quinnipiac rises to No. 1: Quinnipiac University, which is playing just its 15th season of Division I hockey, has become the top-ranked team in the nation.
The Bobcats were ranked No. 1 in both major collegiate polls, becoming the first athletic program in the university’s history to accomplish that feat.
Montana football program not on trial
Courts: The rape trial of a former University of Montana quarterback is about a woman who was betrayed by someone she trusted, not about the school’s football program, a prosecutor said in his opening statement.
Jordan Johnson’s attorney responded that the woman wanted a relationship with the “star quarterback,” then made false accusations when one did not develop after the two had consensual sex.
Johnson is accused of assaulting the woman as they watched a movie together at her home last year. Johnson says the sex was consensual.
