Improving 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra was showing “improved attitude” on Friday but remained in serious condition. Veterinarians treating her in Lexington, Ky., were pleased with the mare’s progress following surgery Wednesday to repair a section of her small colon. She developed complications related to the birth of her 140-pound filly by Bernardini on Tuesday. Rachel Alexandra’s vital signs remain normal and she is brighter and more alert.

Released The Green Bay Packers have released veteran defensive back Charles Woodson. General manager Ted Thompson announced the move Friday, saying the team would not have won the 2010 Super Bowl without Woodson and saying the “once-in-a- generation talent” was an ambassador for the organization off the field. Woodson’s agent, Carl Poston, said Woodson still wants to play for a Super Bowl contender.

• The Indianapolis Colts said they will not re-sign former league sacks champion Dwight Freeney or oft-injured receiver Austin Collie. Both will become unrestricted free agents next month.

• Titus Young’s stay with the Rams was brief. The wide receiver has been placed on waivers after only a few days in St. Louis.

Hired The St. Louis Rams have hired Tim Walton as defensive coordinator, a position they did not fill last season after Gregg Williams was suspended for his role in the Saints’ bounty scandal.

Signed Backup quarterback Tarvaris Jackson has re-signed with the Buffalo Bills. And returning starter Ryan Fitzpatrick will remain part of the team’s future for now. New coach Doug Marrone said he’s informed Fitzpatrick and Jackson that he intends to have both compete for the starting job.

• Michael Bourn, an All-Star center fielder last season with Atlanta, signed his four-year, $48 million contract Friday with the Indians, who announced the deal earlier in the week.

• The Washington Nationals and right-hander Jordan Zimmermann have agreed to a one-year contract, avoiding arbitration. Terms of the deal announced Friday by the Nationals were not immediately known.
