Grabow collects shooting honor
Tanner Grabow, a senior at Shadle Park, was awarded the High Junior honor in both 3-Position Precision Small Bore and Air Rifle to lead the showing by members of the Spokane Junior Rifle Club at the 2013 Junior Sectionals earlier this month.
Grabnow, 18, placed second overall in 3-position with a score of 541 and also claimed firsts in both 3-Position and Air Rifle team competition.
Maliya Hillman, 14, an eighth-grader at Sacajawea Middle School, earned a gold medal in 3-Position, and also shared firsts in both 3-Position and Air Rifle team events.
Brooks Bowen, 11, a fifth-grader at Northwest Christian, earned firsts in both Sporter Air individual and Sporter Air team competition; David Wright, 15, an eighth-grader at Mead Education Partner Program, earned firsts in both 3-Position and Air Rifle team events; and Mason Maystrovich, 11, a sixth-grader at Northwest Christian, earned a first in Sporter Air team.
Basketball
The Spokane area had winners in five of the six divisions of the Elks Hoop Shoot district competition on Jan. 12 in Moses Lake, where the winners qualified for the state finals later this month in Seattle.
Dylan Darling, who attends Liberty Lake Elementary, had the best score of all of the finalists, making 23 of 25 free throws in winning the boys 8-9-year-old division. Madi Brun, who also attends Liberty Lake, made 16 of 25 to win girls 8-9.
Other division winners: Boys 10-11 – Lauren O’Neill, Progress Elementary, 17 of 25. Girls 10-11 – Ellie Boni, Freeman Elementary, 15 of 25, then 4 of 5 in a shootoff. Girls 12-13 – Abigail Jones, St. George’s, 8 of 25.
Bowling
During an unusual day at the Junior Bowlers Tour stop at Cheney Lanes last Sunday, where the top positions were pretty much unchanged from the first ball to the last, Jesse Covington captured the title with a 163-157 win over Steven Ficca, who qualified for the top-five roll-off for the first time this season.
Covington rolled an 892 to lead the qualifying after the first four games and held the top spot, going 4-0 in the match play portion of qualifying. And the next four spots were also the same through the two qualifying rounds – Cody Hurley, fifth; Ryan Gately, fourth; Robbie Winchell, third; and Ficca. And that’s exactly how they finished, too.
Justin Oens had the day’s high game, a 259. Megan Smith led the girls with a 213.
The next JBT is March 3 in Pullman.
College scene
Kaylee Rector, a Lewis-Clark State senior libero from Shadle Park, was named the Most Valuable Player on the Warriors’ volleyball team that captured a sixth straight Frontier Conference championship, and also was selected to the league All-Academic team for a third straight year.
Rector is majoring in radioghraphic science.
Mallorie Schoesler, an LCSC sophomore from West Valley, was named to the All-Academic team for the first time. She has an undeclared major.
To be eligible for the academic team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.0 grade-point average or higher.
• Kristen Hansen, a Western Washington freshman from Mead, who came out of the fall portion of the Vikings’ women’s golf schedule with the leading average on the team, shot 82-85 to tie for 47th at 167 in the first tournament of the spring season, the Super San Diego Collegiate, last week. Hansen averaged 78.3 strokes per round in four tournaments in the fall. WWU placed eighth in San Diego.
Football
The annual Eastern Washington University football awards banquet is Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. in the Pence Union Building Multipurpose Room on the EWU campus in Cheney.
Team awards will be presented and other accomplishments acknowledged, including recognition of the team’s 16 seniors.
Cost is $25 per person. The event includes dinner and video productions and highlights from the 2012 season. Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling (509) 359-2463. The deadline is Feb. 22. No walk-ups will be accepted.
Track and field
Allen Simms, an NCAA champion and six-time All-American at Southern California who has represented the United States at the international level, has been hired by the University of Idaho as an assistant coach to oversee the Vandals’ jumps program, head coach Wayne Phipps announced.
Simms, who has coached at Davidson and Utica College, holds an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Level III Jumps coaching certification and a USA Track & Field Level I coaching certification.
