Obituary: Garrett, Francis
GARRETT, Francis Francis Garrett, age 95, died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends on February 8, 2013 in Spokane, Washington. Francis was born in Birmingham, Alabama on September 22, 1917. He was married to Peggy Gibson Garrett for 56 years and has two surviving children Ron Garrett of Spokane, Washington and Ginger Garrett of San Luis Obispo, California. Francis was an engineer with Chicago Bridge & Iron Company for 48 years working all over the world including England, Germany, South Africa and the Philippines. After his retirement, he began almost 30 years of volunteer work in Spokane with Habitat for Humanity and the Food Bank. He made many lasting friendships with the Volunteers for Habitat and participated in building over 100 homes for Spokane families. Nothing made him happier than watching a child’s face light up when showing them their new home. Francis was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; two sons, Richard and Alan; his parents, James Garrett and Lydia Allgood Garrett; his brother, James Garrett; and his three sisters, Pollie Wells, Pauline Whitehead and Sarah Reeves. Francis was loved and cared for during his last illness by his son Ron, Nancy Paladin, Della Carlson, the staff of Royal Plaza Retirement Center and Hospice of Spokane. Francis was a special person who touched the lives of all who met him. He loved working with Habitat and also loved watching college football, especially his beloved Alabama Crimson Tide. Roll Tide! Francis had joined the Washington State University Body Donation Program in their Basic Medical Sciences Program so no funeral will be held. A memorial service will be held in March. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Habitat for Humanity-Spokane.
