University, Gonzaga Prep reach state round of 16

Kayleigh Valley scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as University held on late to beat Shadle Park 62-58 in a 3A girls basketball subregional elimination game Saturday at University.

The win gave the Titans a berth to the round of 16 for the state tourney. The Highlanders were eliminated.

Valley made 8 of 11 shots, including 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. She made 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth to help hold off Shadle Park’s charge.

The Highlanders (13-10) outscored University 19-12 in the final quarter to close the gap, but couldn’t come all the way back.

Brooke Bailey scored 13 points and McKenzie Peterson added 10 for the Titans (13-10).

Kaycee Hert had 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead Shadle Park.

The win was the Titans’ third over the Highlanders this season.

4A subregional

Gonzaga Prep 58, Chiawana 41: Kayla Leland made three 3-pointers and scored 20 points as the Bullpups jumped out to a quick start and secured a state round-of-16 berth with a win over the Riverhawks in Pasco.

Laura Stockton added 14 points for Gonzaga Prep (21-3), which built a 34-17 halftime lead.
