Chicago extends points streak to 15 games

NHL: Brent Seabrook and Jonathan Toews each had a goal and an assist to help the Chicago Blackhawks beat the visiting Los Angeles Kings 3-2 on Sunday, extending their season-opening points streak to 15 games.

Patrick Sharp also scored for the Blackhawks (12-0-3), who matched the 1984-85 Edmonton Oilers for the second-longest season-opening points streak in NHL history. Chicago is one away from the league record, set by Anaheim in 2006-07, and will try to match the mark on Tuesday when it hosts Vancouver.

Mike Richards scored two power-play goals in the third period to pull the Kings within one after Chicago had built a 3-0 lead.

• Penguins rally after losing lead: Defenseman Paul Martin scored with 2:04 left to lift Pittsburgh to a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo, N.Y.

Pascal Dupuis had two goals and an assist and Sidney Crosby also scored and set up Martin’s goal.

Pittsburgh was forced to rally from behind after squandering a 2-0 lead.

• Late Marchand goal boosts Bruins past Jets: Brad Marchand scored 36 seconds into the third period to lift the visiting Boston Bruins to a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

Tyler Seguin and Daniel Paille also scored, and Patrice Bergeron had two assists for the Bruins. Tuukka Rask stopped 22 for Boston to earn his seventh win of the season.

• Wisconsin edges Minnesota at Soldier Field: Joel Rumpel kicked away a shot as time expired for his 36th save and Wisconsin beat second-ranked Minnesota 3-2 in the Hockey City Classic at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

Sean Little scored what proved to be the game-winner at 16:22 of the second period for the Badgers.

Notre Dame beat Miami (Ohio) 2-1 in the first game of the doubleheader. Mario Lucia and Jeff Costello scored for the Fighting Irish. Miami’s Kevin Morris scored in the third for the RedHawks.

• Minor leaguer has seizure: A Columbus Blue Jackets minor leaguer had a seizure after being checked into the glass causing the game between the Springfield Falcons and Adirondack Phantoms in Springfield, Mass., to be suspended.

Springfield left wing Wade MacLeod was taken to the hospital and the team later said in a statement that the 26-year-old was stable and alert. The team is an American Hockey League affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Azarenka upsets Williams in Qatar

Tennis: Defending champion Victoria Azarenka stunned Serena Williams 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-3 to win the Qatar Open in Doha, Qatar, earning her 16th title and ending a 10-match losing streak against the American.

Azarenka will give up the No. 1 ranking to the second-ranked Williams today but extended her current winning streak to 14 matches, including her second Australian Open title. More importantly, she may have turned around what has been a one-sided rivalry against Williams. Azarenka had not beaten Williams since 2009 in Miami, and had a 1-11 record against her prior to the final.

• Nadal wins first title since return: Rafael Nadal beat David Nalbandian 6-2, 6-3 in the Brazil Open final in Sao Paulo, winning his first title since returning from a seven-month layoff to treat his left knee.

Nadal thrust his arms into the air and pumped his fist after a long ball by Nalbandian made him the champion of the indoor clay-court tournament for the second time. He also won the event in 2005.

It was Nadal’s first title since winning the French Open for the seventh time last June.

• Raonic handles Haas at SAP Open: Milos Raonic won his third consecutive SAP Open in San Jose, Calif., beating Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-3 for the title in the final year of the Bay Area tournament.

Raonic has never lost in 12 matches in this event.

• Del Potro beats Benneteau: Juan Martin Del Potro beat Julien Benneteau 7-6 (2), 6-3 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, to win the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament.

No. 3 Miami remains perfect in ACC play

Men’s basketball: Kenny Kadji scored 12 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 36 seconds left to keep No. 3 Miami perfect in Atlantic Coast Conference play after a 45-43 victory over the host Clemson (S.C.) Tigers (13-12, 5-8).

The Hurricanes (21-3, 12-0) finished with their fewest points of the season, and their high-scoring guard duo of Durand Scott and Shane Larkin were a combined 3-of-16 shooting for 10 points.

• Wisconsin cruises past Ohio State: Ben Brust and Jared Berggren each scored 15 points as No. 20 Wisconsin routed No. 13 Ohio State 71-49.

Sam Dekker came off the bench to score 13 for Wisconsin (18-8, 9-4 Big Ten), while Traevon Jackson added 10.

DeShaun Thomas led the Buckeyes (18-7, 8-5) with 18 points.

No. 4 Stanford holds off No. 15 UCLA

Women’s basketball: Chiney Ogwumike scored 26 points to help No. 4 Stanford (24-2, 13-1 Pac-12) beat 15th-ranked UCLA 68-57 in Los Angeles for the Cardinal’s 15th straight win over the Bruins (19-6, 10-4).

Stanford held UCLA 13 points below the Bruins’ season average and also outrebounded the Bruins 38-31.

• Diggins leads Irish to 19th straight win: Skylar Diggins scored 23 points and Natalie Achonwa added 17 points and 10 rebounds as No. 2 Notre Dame (24-1, 12-0 Big East) rolled to its 19th consecutive victory with a 87-49 rout of Marquette (12-13, 4-8) in Milwaukee.

The Irish have won a school record 20 consecutive regular-season road games, including 16 straight in the conference.

• Iowa routs No. 18 Purdue: Samantha Logic scored 26 points to lead Iowa (17-10, 6-7 Big Ten) to a 72-52 win over No. 18 Purdue (19-6, 8-4).

Logic made 10 of 13 shots and contributed nine assists.

• Seminoles top Tar Heels: Leonor Rodriguez scored 22 points and Chelsea Davis had 21 as No. 19 Florida State (20-5, 10-4 ACC) defeated No. 14 North Carolina 80-73.

Xylina McDaniel scored 25 points to pace North Carolina (23-4, 11-3).

Force wins at NHRA Winternationals

Auto racing: Courtney Force raced to a Funny Car win at the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., and defending Top Fuel world champion Antron Brown walked away from a fiery crash with only minor injuries.

Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel) and Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock) were also winners at the Drag Racing Series season opener.
