Released The New York Jets’ salary-cap purge began Tuesday when the team dumped linebackers Bart Scott and Calvin Pace, safety Eric Smith and offensive tackle Jason Smith – and their hefty contracts. The Jets also waived tight end/fullback Josh Baker, who spent the 2012 season on injured reserve.
• The Kansas City Chiefs have released wide receiver Steve Breaston and tight end Kevin Boss as part of their roster overhaul under new coach Andy Reid.
Announced USA Wrestling says the 2015 world championships will be held in Las Vegas. The organization announced that FILA, the international wrestling federation, has picked the Orleans Arena to host the championships at in September 2015.
• Floyd Mayweather Jr. will fight Robert Guerrero on May 4, and he’s changing networks to do it. The biggest star in boxing dropped a surprise while announcing his long-rumored next bout: After several years on HBO, Mayweather, 36, is moving to Showtime with a lucrative multi-fight deal. The fight likely will be in Las Vegas.
• The U.S. women’s soccer team will play an exhibition against Canada in Toronto on June 2, their first meeting since the Americans’ 4-3 overtime win on Alex Morgan’s stoppage-time goal in last year’s Olympic semifinal.
• The NFL has promoted Alberto Riveron, the league’s first Hispanic referee, to senior director of officiating. He became a referee in 2008. He served four seasons as a side judge before that.
Hired Former Boise State and Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins has been hired to coach the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL. He was 19-39 at Colorado and 53-11 at Boise State. His overall record is 112-61-1.
Arrested The Tampa Bay Buccaneers say they’re gathering information after defensive end Da’Quan Bowers was arrested after a handgun was found in his luggage at a New York airport. Bowers was arraigned on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and posted $10,000 bond.
Withdrawn Second-ranked Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from the Dubai Tennis Championships because of a bone bruise in her foot.
