Yakima Valley sweeps CCS men, women

Montero Rice totaled 22 points and nine rebounds Wednesday as the Yakima Valley men defeated Community Colleges of Spokane 82-72 at Spokane CC to complete the NWAACC regular season.

The Yaks (20-8, 10-4) broke a tie with CCS (18-9, 9-5) for second place in the East Region.

Tyler Edwards scored 21 points, and Brady Bagby and Kwinn Hanson combined for 27 points and 20 rebounds for CCS, which will open the NWAACC tournament in Kennewick on March 2 against South No. 2.

Women’s basketball

Sammi Jo Blodgett had 17 points and six assists as Yakima Valley (16-11, 9-5) edged CC Spokane 72-70 at SCC to claim the East’s No. 3 seed to the NWAACC tournament.

Morgan Freeman and Riley Holsinger combined for 33 points and 20 rebounds for the Sasquatch (15-11, 8-6), who nearly overcame a 14-point deficit. CCS, No. 4 from the East, will open the tournament March 2 against South No. 1 Clackamas (22-4).

Golf

Chris Williams (Moscow High) tied for second place to lead Washington to a tie for the team title at The Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif. Williams finished at 3-under-par 210, five shots behind UCLA’s Pedro Figueiredo. UW and USC both carded 851.

Track and field

Idaho swept the Western Athletic Conference’s indoor athlete of the week awards, with Barry Britt (distances) and Matt Sullivan (pole vault) honored among men, and Liga Velvere (800 meters) and Kristine Leonard (thrower from Rathdrum) selected among women.
