Gonzales tames UNLV

Marco Gonzales pitched seven strong innings and Gonzaga beat UNLV 9-3 in its opening game of the Pacific Baseball Invitational Friday afternoon in Stockton, Calif.

Gonzales, a preseason first-team All-American, allowed one run on six hits while striking out eight in his first win of the season.

The Bulldogs (3-2) jumped ahead early. After loading the bases in the first inning, Gonzales hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the first run. Zach Abbruzza, Billy Moon and Cabe Reiten followed with RBI singles for a 4-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs play UNLV (4-2) and Pacific today in a day-night doubleheader.

• Washington State’s game in Pullman against Eastern Michigan was postponed due to snow.

Track and field

Washington State’s Drew Jordan and Stephan Scott-Ellis notched wins to lead the Cougars in the first day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle.

Jordan, a junior, won the 5-kilometer race in a personal-best time of 13 minutes, 54.35 seconds.

Scott-Ellis won a second straight MPSF title in the long jump with a season-best 25 feet, 4 ¾ inches.

Kristine Felix led the WSU women with a runner-up finish in the pole vault. She cleared 12-11, sixth-best in school history.

• Marlyn Anderson and Emma Murillo had third-place finishes to lead the Eastern Washington men’s and women’s teams at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in Bozeman, Mont.

Anderson reached a distance of 55-11 ¾ in the shot put, which ranks fifth all-time at EWU. Murillo took third in the women’s weight throw with a personal-best 58-8 ½.

Wrestling

North Idaho is in first after the first day of the NJCAA National tournament in Des Moines, Iowa.

NIC’s Michael Carreon (133 pounds), Jeremy Golding (149), Ryan Zumwalt (165) and Caleb Rivera (184) are all still alive in the championship brackets for national titles today.

Men’s golf

Hank Frame shot a final-round 74 and finished tied for ninth place and Washington State took seventh as a team at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate tournament in Kahuku, Hawaii.

It was the fifth top-10 finish for the WSU senior in six tournaments this year.

WSU shot 14-over for the final round, climbing two spots in the 16-team field. Frame’s teammate, sophomore Alex Wagner, finished in 37th at 12-over.

Softball

Snow swept a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader from North Idaho in Ephraim, Utah, 5-0 and 9-0.
