Rotary donates books to kids

The Rotary Club of Spokane Valley is donating a book to every child at some Valley elementary schools.

On Thursday and Friday, Rotary members will deliver books to Trentwood, Broadway, Opportunity, Ness, Orchard Center and Trent elementary schools. Friday is the birthday of Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss.

The book donation program started in 2010 as Books for Kids at Broadway Elementary.

Science bowl

Teams of four students from three Spokane-area schools will compete Friday and next Saturday at Whitworth University for a chance to advance to the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C.

West Valley’s Centennial Middle School, Spokane’s Chase Middle School and All Saints Catholic School are entered in the state competition.

The event is hosted by the Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

About 4,500 middle schoolers across the nation will compete this year, spokesman Dirk Fillpot said.
