Far be it from me to criticize etymologist Brian McInerney’s defense of the term “Redskin” as a team name (Letters, Feb. 17, “Offensive? Really?”), but I felt it necessary to consult my trusty dictionary (Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged) to make sure he was on solid ground in his attack on “liberals” who found the term offensive.
And I quote: redskin (red’skin’) n. Slang (often disparaging and offensive). a North American Indian.
Perhaps someday we will have a team with the mascot name “Sputtering Paleface Codgers.”
