Self gets win No. 500 after Jayhawks rally
Men’s basketball: Elijah Johnson scored a career-high 39 points and No. 6 Kansas rallied to beat Iowa State 108-96 in overtime on Monday night in Ames, Iowa, for coach Bill Self’s 500th career victory.
Travis Releford added 19 points for the Jayhawks, who snapped Iowa State’s 22-game home winning streak and kept pace with No. 13 Kansas State atop the Big 12.
Johnson made two free throws with 4.9 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 90-all. He and Releford buried 3s to put Kansas ahead 100-92 with 2:03 left, and Johnson drilled a 30-footer with 54 seconds left.
Korie Lucious scored 23 points and Tyrus McGee had 22 for the Cyclones, who dropped their third overtime game in Big 12 play.
• Marquette sneaks past Syracuse : Davante Gardner scored a career-high 26 points and No. 22 Marquette beat No. 12 Syracuse 74-71 in Milwaukee.
Gardner made all seven of his shots and converted 12 of 13 free throws in 33 minutes.
C.J. Fair had 20 points for Syracuse.
• Kansas State beats Texas Tech: Thomas Gipson scored 20 points, Angel Rodriguez added 16 and No. 13 Kansas State beat Texas Tech 75-55 in Manhattan, Kan., giving the Wildcats 12 conference wins for the first time in 40 years.
Chandler leads Nuggets past Lakers
NBA: Wilson Chandler scored 23 points in place of an injured Danilo Gallinari, and Ty Lawson added 22 in the Denver Nuggets’ 119-108 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Lakers.
Denver outscored Los Angeles 33-3 in fast-break points.
• Horford’s big game leads Hawks: Al Horford had 23 points and 22 rebounds, and the Atlanta Hawks beat the Detroit Pistons 114-103 in Auburn Hills, Mich.
Josh Smith added 23 points for the Hawks, who were ahead 61-51 at halftime and led by as many as 26 in the third quarter.
• Wizards edge Raptors: Bradley Beal scored 20 points, Nene had 11 points and nine rebounds, and the visiting Washington Wizards beat the Toronto Raptors 90-84.
Blackhawks’ streak at 19 after overtime win
NHL: Marian Hossa scored 1:44 into overtime and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the visiting Edmonton Oilers 3-2 to stretch their NHL-record opening points streak to 19 games.
Patrick Sharp set up the winning goal with a quick turn along the boards and a drive to the goal that led to two stops by Nikolai Khabibulin. Hossa picked up the second rebound and was stuffed by Khabibulin again before he poked it in for his ninth goal of the season.
• Predators beat Stars: Roman Josi scored his second goal 28 seconds into overtime, and the host Nashville Predators edged the Dallas Stars 5-4.
Mike Fisher, Craig Smith and Patric Hornqvist each scored goals for Nashville.
• Regin scores in shootout as Senators win: Peter Regin scored in the fifth round of the shootout and Ben Bishop made 44 saves in regulation and overtime, leading the Ottawa Senators to a 2-1 win over the visiting Montreal Canadiens.
Sources: 49ers still shopping Smith
NFL: The San Francisco 49ers are talking to teams about a trade for Alex Smith but currently do not have a deal in place, league sources said. The 49ers can discuss trading Smith, who had a 104.1 passer rating before suffering a season-altering concussion Nov. 11, but no trade can be finalized until the league year begins March 12.
For the last month, reports have consistently linked Smith to the Chiefs, who have the No. 1 overall pick in the draft and had one of the worst quarterback situations in the league last season.
Griner, No. 1 Baylor smash Oklahoma
Women’s basketball: Brittney Griner scored 15 points, tied her season-high with 15 rebounds and blocked seven shots to lead top-ranked Baylor to its 25th straight victory, 86-64 against Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.
Griner moved past UConn’s Maya Moore into fourth in career scoring in women’s basketball with 3,045 points.
• Baylor still on top: Baylor remains No. 1 in the Associated Press women’s basketball poll for an eighth straight week after topping UConn last Monday night.
The first five stayed unchanged with Notre Dame, UConn, Stanford and Duke following Baylor.
Teen confesses setting off flare
Soccer: A 17-year-old Corinthians fan has confessed that he set off a flare that killed a 14-year-old Bolivian boy in a Copa Libertadores soccer match last week.
The teenager, whose name was not revealed, made the confession to a Brazilian television channel late Sunday. He was expected to turn himself in to local police later Monday.
