Obituary: Mcgrail, Sarah “Sally”
Born in 1917 in Cambridge, MA, her mother, four siblings, and an adopted cousin were thrust into abject poverty in 1918 when her father died in the flu pandemic.
Sally often took advantage of 10-cent ladies day at Fenway Park, walking eight miles each way.
Sally lived like a Christian with four aces through depressions, wars, near-death experiences and the premature death of a 35 year old daughter.
She was an A-student from elementary school through Georgetown University.
She married Myles McGrail, a man of similar disposition and intelligence.
Myles survived the beaches of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge to become a chemical company executive who traveled widely with Sally.
Sally and her spouse shared a massive trove of poetry and songs in their heads, often answering their children’s questions with a Shakespearean quote.
A president of the PTA, donor of gallons of blood, she was a woman for all seasons.
Non of her siblings survive her.
Her husband and daughter, Mary Ellen McGrail, preceded her in death.
She is survived by son Myles McGrail Jr, (Mary); grand-daughters Amy Smith (Mike) and Erin McGrail; and great-grand- children Kayla and Claire Smith.
All reside in Spokane, WA, Sally’s home for 10 years.
