In brief: SpokeFest set to take grant applications
SPOKANE - Starting on March 1, the SpokeFest Association will be accepting grant applications from schools and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations looking to fund projects promoting bicycle safety, education or commuting.
Since 2010, SpokeFest has purchased bicycles and helmets for schools and paid for teacher training, among other projects.
Funds may be used to purchase equipment, for publications and promotion.

Music school opens scholarship contest
SPOKANE – The Family School of Music is awarding a limited number of scholarships for a full year of private or group music lessons during the 2013-’14 school year to winners of its essay contest.
Students between 5 and 14 years old must write an essay of no more than 500 words explaining what music means to them and why a scholarship would be to their benefit. The Family School of Music is dedicated to making musical education available to children, teens and adults in the Spokane area.
Essays must be submitted online by May 18.

GU students to host Take Back the Night
SPOKANE – Gonzaga University students will gather at 7 p.m. Friday for Take Back the Night, a worldwide movement to raise awareness about and put an end to domestic, sexual, dating and gender violence.
The students will share personal stories, followed by a candlelight vigil to honor victims of sexual violence at 9 p.m.
Take Back the Night was started in Belgium in 1976 by women attending the International Tribunal on Crimes Against Women.

Valley Youth Soccer registration closing
SPOKANE VALLEY – Today is the last day for children and teens to sign up for the spring soccer season offered through Valley Youth Soccer.
The season is April 6 through May 18 and the games are played on Saturdays at Spokane Valley schools – most are played at Trent Elementary School.
Shirts are provided by the league, but each player will need to provide shin guards, socks, soccer shorts and their own soccer ball. Soccer shoes are not required, but recommended for better traction.
It costs $39 for players ages 4 and 5, and $45 for those 6 and older. After today, some spots will be open in the league, but a late fee will be applied. To sign up, visit www.vysoccer.org.
Looff Carrousel ready to reopen to riders
SPOKANE – The Looff Carrousel in Riverfront Park reopens Friday. It has been closed for its annual maintenance and restoration break, but the horses and other animals are now ready to take children and adults for a ride. The Carrousel will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through March 24, after which hours will be extended. Tokens are $2 each or eight for $10.
