Johnson finalist at Nevada

John Johnson, Washington State’s senior associate athletic director, is a finalist for the AD job at the University of Nevada.

Johnson, formerly the athletic director at Weber State, is one of three finalists for the position.

Timothy Leonard, senior associate athletic director at SMU and former vice president for athletics development at Central Florida, and Doug Knuth, senior associate athletic director at Utah and ex-assistant AD at Michigan State, are the others.

Arena football

The Spokane Shock open training camp this weekend in preparation for the upcoming Arena Football League season, which Spokane begins with a road game against the Cleveland Gladiators on March 24.

The team will first come together for non-padded practices Sunday and Monday, and the first padded practice is Tuesday.

The team’s preseason Orange and White Game is March 10, with doors opening at the Arena at 2 p.m. and kickoff set for 4 p.m.

Swimming

The University of Idaho women are in third place after the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Championships in San Antonio.

The Vandals set two school records – the 200 medley relay team finished fourth in 1 minute, 41.47 seconds, and the 800 free relay team finished fifth in 7:25.52. Paige Hunt finished second in the 1 meter dive with 284.10 points.

• Washington State’s women competed in the first day of the Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, Wash. The “B” team in the 200 medley relay finished in 1:43.20, while the “A” team was disqualified. The 800 freestyle relay team was also disqualified.
