Last-place Nittany Lions stun Michigan

Men’s college basketball: Jermaine Marshall scored 25 points and Penn State upset No. 4 Michigan (23-5, 10-5) 84-78 on Wednesday night at State College, Pa., for its first Big Ten win of the season.

The Nittany Lions (9-18, 1-14) had lost 18 straight regular-season conference games dating to last season, but they roared back from a 15-point deficit with 10:39 left behind the energetic play of Marshall. The junior guard scored 19 in the second half, including four 3s that whipped Jordan Center fans into a frenzy.

Miami tops Virginia Tech: No. 5 Miami (23-4, 14-1 ACC) finally shook a 10-day scoring slump and pulled away from visiting Virginia Tech (12-16, 3-12) for a 76-58 victory.

Georgetown edges UConn: Otto Porter Jr.’s layup with 9.5 seconds remaining in the second overtime gave No. 7 Georgetown (22-4, 12-3 Big East) a 79-78 victory over Connecticut (19-8, 9-6), the Hoyas’ 10th straight win and first at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn.

Billikens win 10th straight: Dwayne Evans had 21 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks, helping No. 18 Saint Louis (22-5, 11-2 Atlantic 10) run its winning streak to 10 games with a victory over visiting Saint Joseph’s (15-11, 6-7).

Palmieri’s hat trick sends Ducks to win

NHL: Kyle Palmieri ended a 10-game goal drought with his first NHL hat trick, Viktor Fasth made 20 saves, and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Nashville Predators 5-1 for their seventh straight home victory.

Curry scores 54, but Knicks win

NBA: Carmelo Anthony scored 35 points, J.R. Smith hit the tiebreaking shot with 1:10 left, and the New York Knicks overcame Stephen Curry’s NBA season-high 54 points to beat the visiting Golden State Warriors 109-105.

Curry was 18 of 28 from the field, finishing one shy of the NBA record with 11 3-pointers, in a performance that had the crowd hanging on his every shot.

Suns stop Spurs’ home winning streak: Jermaine O’Neal had 22 points and 13 rebounds and the Phoenix Suns beat San Antonio 105-101 in overtime to snap the Spurs’ 18-game home winning streak.

Nuggets edge Blazers: Andre Miller scored the go-ahead layup with 24.9 seconds left and the visiting Denver Nuggets held off the Portland Trail Blazers 111-109 for their third straight victory.

Ellis hits game-winner: Monta Ellis sank an off-balance 3-pointer just before the final buzzer to give the visiting Milwaukee Bucks a 110-107 victory over the Houston Rockets. Ellis scored 27 points and handed out 13 assists.

Westbrook, Durant lead Thunder: Russell Westbrook scored 29 points, Kevin Durant recorded his third career triple-double and the Oklahoma City Thunder finished a perfect three-game homestand by routing the short-handed New Orleans Hornets 119-74.

Durant had 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Seattle group paid nonrefundable $30 million: A Seattle group led by Chris Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made a nonrefundable payment of $30 million by Feb. 1 as part of their agreement to buy the Sacramento Kings, the Sacramento Bee and Seattle Times confirmed.

Hibbert, Lee suspended: Pacers center Roy Hibbert and Warriors forward David Lee have each been suspended a game without pay for starting an altercation during their game that drifted into the courtside seats at Indianapolis on Tuesday.

The NBA said that the Warriors’ Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson and the Pacers’ Lance Stephenson were fined $35,000 each for escalating the fight.

Beckham starts in 2-0 victory

Soccer: David Beckham made his first start for Paris Saint-Germain, which advanced to the French Cup quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over rival Marseille in Paris.

He played until the 86th minute in the cup match, leaving three minutes after receiving a yellow card for a confrontation and argument with Jordan Ayew.

Benitez leaving Chelsea: Chelsea interim manager Rafa Benitez announced he will leave at the end of the season, making his decision public after his team advanced to an FA Cup quarterfinal against Manchester United.

Chelsea beat second-tier Middlesbrough 2-0.

Atletico Madrid advances: Atletico Madrid advanced to a Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, holding Sevilla to a 2-2 tie and winning on 4-3 aggregate in the total-goals series.

Bayern Munich wins: Arjen Robben curled in a shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 43rd minute, and Bayern Munich defeated defending champion Borussia Dortmund 1-0 to reach the German Cup semifinals.
