Education Notes: Mt. Spokane dance team advances to districts

The Mt. Spokane High School Dance Team placed third in the pom Division at the Shadle Park Dance Invitational on Feb. 23-24. Team member Corri Budge won third place in the drill down competition.

The team will head to the district competition March 9 at Lewis and Clark High School.

Choice student signup deadlines coming up

Spokane Public Schools choice students must apply for first, seventh and ninth grade by Friday.

Choice students must have their form completed for next school year by Friday. The special transfer request must be delivered to the student’s current neighborhood school – not to the school of choice. Students will be notified about the status of their request by June 15.

For kindergarteners who are currently choice students, a new request to stay at their choice school or another school for first grade must be completed before May 15.

Ordinary kindergarten registration in Spokane Public Schools begins on Friday for students who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31. New students may register at their neighborhood elementary school on school days between 8:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. When they register, they will receive a tote full of educational activities for the entire family.

To register, parents or guardians must bring a birth certificate or other verification of age and immunization records.

Mt. Spokane presents ‘Little Shop of Horrors’

Performances of “Little Shop of Horrors” continue today through March 8 at Mt. Spokane High School.

The play is about florist Seymour Krelborn, played by Bryton Martin, who is terrorized by his ever-growing monstrous and gruesome plant, Audrey II, brought to life by puppeteer Grayson Sinclair and voiced by Blake Countryman. The humorous struggle to stop Audrey II from taking over in this comedic musical brings Seymour and his love, Audrey, played by Bridget Stapleton, closer.

The cast includes Trevor Haley as Orin Scrivello; Jack Burke as Mr. Mushnik; and Brianne Wigen, Elsie Story, Allison Smith, Megan McQuarrie, Dallas Blenz, and Kaity Bailey as the Doo Wop Girls.

The curtain rises at 7 p.m. today, Friday and Wednesday through March 8.

Tickets are $5 for students and senior citizens and $7 for adults and may be purchased in advance in the MSHS business office or at the door on the evening of the show.
