Pro-choice on weapons

In his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama decried violent crime and then listed mass shootings that occurred in government-imposed “gun free” victim disarmament zones. Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, D.C., deny citizens their human right to self-defense and are the most violent locations in the country.

On a larger scale, Mexico severely restricts firearms, and violent crime is rampant. This is due in part to Obama’s and Attorney General Eric Holder’s Fast and Furious weapons delivery program, and the war on drugs that works to support prices and guarantee profits to drug lords. To further erode our civil rights, Obama wants to impose Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s failed assault weapons ban. Studies, including one by the Clinton administration, found this ban to be of no value in deterring crime. Violent crime rates were falling before the ban, and continued to fall after the ban expired. Now, the Department of Homeland Security wants to purchase full-auto AR-15s because they are “suitable for personal defense in close quarters” as our government denies us access to these tools for self-defense.

To reduce crime, curtail victim disarmament zones, end the failed war on drugs and allow people their choice of self-defense tools.

Editorial: Washington state lawmakers scramble to keep public in the dark

State lawmakers want to create a legislative loophole in Washington’s Public Records Act. While it’s nice to see Democrats and Republicans working together for once, it’s just too bad that their agreement is that the public is the enemy. As The Spokesman-Review’s Olympia reporter Jim Camden explained Feb. 22, lawmakers could vote on a bill today responding to a court order that the people of Washington are entitled to review legislative records.
