Eagles continue roll after beating Grizzlies

Sophomore Laura Hughes made two free throws with 1.8 seconds left to boost the Eastern Washington women’s basketball team to a 58-56 victory over Montana at Cheney on Thursday night for the Eagles’ fifth consecutive victory.

EWU sophomore Lexie Nelson, who began her collegiate career at Montana before transferring, led EWU with 14 points. Melissa Williams, another Eagles sophomore, had 10 rebounds.

The Eagles (7-5, 3-0) have a half-game lead in the Big Sky Conference.

Katie Baker (Lake City HS) led Montana (8-4, 2-1) with 13 points.

• The North Idaho Cardinals let a seven-point halftime lead slip away as the nation’s top-ranked team dropped its first game of the year, 55-49 to host Salt Lake in a Scenic West Athletic Conference game.

Rachel Morris’ layup with 5:17 to go put the Bruins up for good at 41-40.

Neither team shot well, but the Cardinals (17-1, 2-1) were particularly poor from 3-point range at 11.8 percent. While NIC held a decided advantage in turnovers the Bruins (10-5, 1-1) did the same on the boards.

Katie Buskey and Kabri Emerson had 11 points each for NIC. Salt Lake’s Katiei Richens scored 20 points, hitting 10 of 14 free throws. She added 10 rebounds.

• Addie Schivo led five Vandals in double figures with 18 points as Idaho (4-9, 1-1) took a 82-65 Western Athletic Conference victory over the San Jose State Spartans (4-10, 1-2) in Moscow, Idaho.

Connie Ballestero and Christiana Salvatore added 13 points, Alyssa Charlston 12 and Stacey Barr 10 for Idaho. Ali Forde pulled down 15 rebounds and Barr and Charlston 10 apiece as the Vandals held a 60-39 advantage on the boards.
