Griffits, Arizona beat Coug women

Alli Gloyd scored 19 points and Coeur d’Alene’s Kama Griffitts made 5 of 5 free throws during the final 26 seconds Friday as Arizona stopped Washington State 71-65 in a Pac-12 Conference women’s basketball opener at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman.

Arizona (9-3) trailed by five points three times in the second half before rallying. Davellyn Whyte’s 3-pointer with 4:49 left put Arizona ahead to stay. WSU (4-8) closed within two points four times in the final 3:24.

Freshman Lia Galdeira led three Cougars in double figures with 17 points.

Washington 77, ASU 74: Talia Walton had 19 points and five blocked shots as the host Huskies (9-3) edged the Sun Devils (8-5) in a Pac-12 opener.

Pacific 65, Whitworth 60: Heather Hitch scored 14 points and the host Boxers (9-2, 2-1 Northwest Conference) shot 20 of 22 from the line to knock the Pirates (9-3, 2-1) out of first place at Forest Grove, Ore.

Hitch’s layup with 47 seconds left gave the Boxers a 61-57 lead. Kayla Johnson led Whitworth with 14 points.

Men’s golf

University of Washington senior Chris Williams (Moscow High) shot a second-round 3-over-par 75 and stands in 11th place among individuals at the Copa de las Americas tournament in Miami.
