Manning wins battle between mentor, pupil
DALLAS – Pat Swilling Jr. hit a 3-pointer with 3.8 seconds left to give Danny Manning and Tulsa a 48-47 victory over Larry Brown and SMU in just the second coaching matchup of an NCAA-winning coach and the Final Four’s most outstanding player.
The shot by Swilling Jr., son of former NFL linebacker Pat Swilling, thwarted a huge second-half comeback from SMU. The Mustangs (10-6) trailed 34-17 at halftime before outscoring the Hurricane 29-8 for a 46-42 lead.

Manning, the eighth-leading scorer in NCAA history, was the star on Kansas’ 1988 national championship team. Brown is the only coach to win NCAA and NBA titles.
The game was the Conference USA opener for both teams.
