Obituary: Mielke, George Willis

MIELKE, George Willis (Age 90) Passed away on January 4, 2013, at the Lincoln Hospital Transitional Unit after a three and a half month stay. Until that time he spent his entire life living in Rocklyn and was born on June 1, 1922 at the family home there. George attended the Rocklyn Zion United Methodist Church starting with being pushed there in a baby carriage by his parents where services were conducted in German and English. George was proud of his German heritage, spoke the language fluently, and sang tenor in the Rocklyn German Quartet. In 2000, he was able to travel to his mother’s home in Streichen, Germany to see the beautiful small village she left at age 18 to come to America. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edwina Mielke at the family home; daughter Susan Hamilton of Chehalis, Washington, daughter Roberta Hein and son-in-law Gene of Davenport; and four grandchildren, Krista Hamilton of Rockville, Maryland, Kara Hamilton of Chehalis, Washington, Erich Hein and wife Janelle of Davenport, and Gregory Hein of Bothell, Washington. George was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Frieda Wentsch Mielke, brother Carl, and sisters Helen Sandygren and Evelyn MacKenzie. George served 30 years on the Board of Directors for Lincoln Electric Cooperative and was Secretary of the Board for many of those years. He was also a Director for the Lincoln Hospital Foundation and a member of Wilson Grange and the Washington Wheat Association. At one time, there was a Rocklyn Gun Club, where George proved to be quite a marksman. He also enjoyed reading history and biographies and spending time with his family. Funeral service will be Friday, January 11, at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Washington. Interment will be at the Rocklyn Cemetery.
