Spokane’s Pokorny wins collegiate cup

Annie Pokorny, 20, of Spokane won the “collegiate cup” as the top female college athlete at the U.S. National Cross Country Skiing Championships that concluded Tuesday on the Olympic courses at Soldier Hollow, Utah.

Pokorny, a sophomore at Middlebury College in Vermont, qualified to ski for the U.S. at the World U-23 championships to be held in Liberic, Czech Republic, at the end of January.

Pokorny developed her skills as a teenager with the Spokane Nordic Junior Ski Team.

Men’s basketball

Brady Bagby scored 23 points to lead a balanced Community Colleges of Spokane attack in as the Sasquatch pulled away in the second half for a 92-67 triumph over Wenatchee Valley College in NWAAC play in Wenatchee.

Tyler Edwards added 19 points, Kwinn Hanson had 18 points with a game-high 13 rebounds and Eric Holbrook chipped in 11 points for the Sasquatch (11-4, 2-0 NWAAC), who led by just two points at halftime but outscored the Knights 52-29 after the break.

CCS shot 50 percent from the field on the night while holding Wenatchee Valley to 37.7 percent.

Women’s basketball

Breanna Wilson scored 20 points to lead Community Colleges of Spokane to a 61-53 NWAAC victory over Wenatchee Valley College in Wenatchee.

Rylie Holsinger added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Sasquatch (9-5, 2-0 NWAAC), who led by as many as 22 points.

Gymnastics

Mt. Spokane’s Amara Poquette, competing for the first time this year because of injury, earned 35.025 points to take the all-around title in a meet at Central Valley.

The Bears won the team title with 160.075 points, with the Wildcats in second place with 148.125 points. Ferris was third (142.475) and Shadle Park fourth (136.775). CV eclipsed 160 points for the first time this year.

Poquette edged CV’s McKinzie Carter (34.950), with the Highlanders’ Hailey Berry third (34.2).

Poquette won the vault and beam, while Berry won on the bars and Issabella Erdem of CV won the floor exercise.
