Police finish sweep of hospital building: No gunman

Staff report
The Providence Sacred Heart Doctors Building was locked down this evening as police searched for a possible gunman. Police responded about 7:20 p.m. to the building across from the main building of Sacred Heart Medical Center on reports of a man entering the building with a rifle under his arm. Authorities surrounded the seven-floor building and evacuated many occupants, though some remained working inside under sheltered conditions. Police went through the parking garage and the building floor by floor but did not find the gunman. Though the hospital was locked down, the emergency room remained open. The man was described as white, with dark hair and a dark beard. Two witnesses, police said, saw him walking in the building carrying a gun.
