Late run boosts Whitworth past George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. – George Valle converted a three-point play with 22 seconds left and the Whitworth men held on to beat George Fox 61-59 in a Northwest Conference basketball game Friday night.

Colton McCargar made 7 of 11 shots and finished with a team-high 16 points for the fifth-ranked Pirates, who ended the game on a 10-2 run.

Wade Gebbers added 11 points for Whitworth, including a late 3-pointer that sparked the Pirates’ run.

Whitworth opened the game on a 20-5 spurt, but George Fox closed the first half on a 26-5 run to take a six-point halftime lead.

Whitworth is 6-0 in NWC play and 14-1 overall.

Sean Atkins connected on 10 of 19 shots and finished with 27 points for George Fox. Jason Martin added 13 points.

George Fox fell to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in conference games.
