In brief: Wisconsin men beat No. 12 Illinois by 23

Men’s basketball: Jared Berggren scored 15 points and grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds, and Traevon Jackson added a career-best 14 points to lead Wisconsin over No. 12 Illinois 74-51 on Saturday in Madison, Wis.

The Badgers (12-4, 3-0 Big Ten) scored the game’s first 14 points and led by 20 at halftime on the way to their sixth straight win.

The Badgers outshot Illinois (14-4, 1-3) 49.1 percent to 35.3 percent and outrebounded the Illini 43-24.

• Hooisers top Gophers: Victor Oladipo had 20 points and six rebounds and Jordan Hulls knocked down four 3-pointers, helping No. 5 Indiana (15-1, 3-0 Big Ten) hold off No. 8 Minnesota (15-2, 3-1) for an 88-81 victory in Indianapolis.

• K-State edges West Virginia: Shane Southwell made two free throws with 21 seconds left, then blocked Gary Browne’s layup attempt with a second left to preserve a 65-64 win for No. 18 Kansas State (13-2, 2-0 Big 12) over West Virginia (8-7, 1-2) in Morgantown, W.Va.

• UConn halts Irish streak: Shabazz Napier scored 19 points, Tyler Olander scored 12 of his career-high 16 points in the second half and Connecticut (12-3, 2-1 Big East) ended the game with a 7-0 run to earn a 65-58 win over No. 17 Notre Dame (14-2, 2-1) in South Bend, Ind., ending a 12-game winning streak by the Irish.

• Turner too much for Kentucky: Elston Turner scored 40 points for Texas A&M (12-3, 2-0 SEC), and the Aggies topped Kentucky (10-5, 1-1) in Lexington, Ky., 83-71 for their first road conference win as members of the Southeastern Conference.

Wizards top Hawks in Wall’s return

NBA: John Wall gave his teammates a lift with 14 points and four assists in his first game of the season, and the worst-in-the-NBA Washington Wizards have their first winning streak after a 93-83 victory over the visiting Atlanta Hawks.

Wall’s playing time will be limited as he returns from a knee injury.

• Magic stun Clippers: J.J. Redick gave Orlando its first lead on a 3-pointer with 42 seconds left, Arron Afflalo tied his season high with 30 points, and the Magic beat the Los Angeles Clippers 104-101 in Los Angeles to snap a 10-game skid.

The loss ended the Clippers’ franchise-record 13-game winning streak at home.

• Suns pound Bulls: Luis Scola scored 22 points to help the Phoenix Suns beat the Chicago Bulls 97-81 in Chicago, snapping a five-game skid.

• Mavericks cruise past Grizzlies: Shawn Marion scored a season-high 20 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 17 and the Dallas Mavericks won consecutive games for the first time in a month with a 104-83 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in Dallas.

American Ligety wins men’s giant slalom

Winter sports: Ted Ligety won a World Cup giant slalom in Adelboden, Switzerland, for his fourth victory of the season in his specialist event.

Ligety was second after the first run but got his fourth win in five GS races this season by finishing 1.15 seconds ahead of runner-up Fritz Dopfer of Germany, in a combined time of 2 minutes 28.67 seconds.

• McKennis earns first World Cup win: American Alice McKennis earned her first World Cup victory by winning a downhill in Anton, Austria, and Lindsey Vonn placed sixth on her return from a nearly monthlong break.

NCAA investigation of Miami nears end

Miscellany: The nearly 2-year-old NCAA investigation into Miami’s compliance practices is nearing an end.

Two people with knowledge of the situation told the AP that the NCAA is scheduling meetings to discuss specific allegations with individuals who are believed to have committed violations found during the inquiry. Some meetings will take place Monday.

• Women’s 3-point record falls: Florida Gulf Coast sank 22 shots from 3-point range to break its own single-game Division I women’s record of 21 in a 97-60 victory over East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tenn.

• Chelsea pummels Stoke: Chelsea routed Stoke 4-0 in London to move into third place in the Premier League, taking advantage of Jonathan Walters’ two own goals and missed penalty kick.

• Dakar Rally halted: Rain halted the eighth stage of the Dakar Rally in Tucuman, Argentina, with only 12 cars finishing.

It was not immediately clear when the stage would be completed, as today was scheduled to be a rest day.

• Henley, Langley tied for lead: PGA Tour rookies Russell Henley and Scott Langley will play one more round together at the Sony Open in Honolulu, this time with a trophy and a Masters invitation at stake.

Henley two-putted from 30 feet for birdie on the last hole for a 3-under 67. That gave him a share of the lead with Langley, who had a 65.
