The fortified English Camp was protected by this building with round holes in the side walls for muskets.
For 12 years starting in 1860, the British and the United States jointly occupied and claimed San Juan Island and the surrounding islands. Finally the boundary was determined in peaceful arbitration. At left, the ship HMS Boxer supplies the English Camp in 1868. Right, there are still original buildings scattered around both camps.
The ferry arrives at Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, on a regular schedule throughout the winter. The picturesque scene practically requires a photograph.
Within one block of the ferry landing is downtown Friday Harbor. Restaurants, museums, art galleries, gift shops and lodging are all close by in this quaint village.
