Obituary: Hunter, Mabel Irene

HUNTER, Mabel Irene Born April 11, 1915 to Warren and Fern Alien in Falls City, OR.

Mabel died December 5, 2012 in Hayden Idaho Her father died of heart failure three months after she was born.

After Fern married Jack Baker the family became Seventh Day Adventists.

Mabel attended school at the Laurelwood Academy in Oregon before studying pre-nursing at Walla Walla College and then did her nurses training at the Portland Sanitarium Hospital.

After graduation and becoming a Registered Nurse, Mabel moved to Nampa, ID and married Earl Hunter on October 31, 1940 in Nampa, ID after which both graduated with Bachelors degrees from Northwest Nazarene College.

Mabel joined her husband as pastor of Churches of the Nazarene in Grand Coulee, WA and Coeur d’Alene, ID.

She worked as a nurse in each place.

When Earl signed up as a Chaplain in the Army, Mabel spent some time in Texas and then in Idaho during the war years.

Mabel also served as a missionary nurse in the jungles of Peten, Guatemala; the highlands of Bolivia and in remote areas of densely populated Nigeria.

She would brush up her nursing skills in hospitals every four or five years while back in the U.S. in places like Nampa, ID; Moses Lake, WA; Eugene, OR and Burley, ID.

On returning to the U.S. from Africa Mabel returned to nursing in hospitals and nursing homes in Springfield, OR and Pasadena, CA.

While Earl completed studies on a doctorate and a teaching certificate.

Upon retiring from mission service, Mabel joined her husband in the pastorates of churches in New Bridge, OR; Burley, ID; Green River, WY; Tulsa, OK and Skiatook, OK.

In retirement years Mabel has lived with her husband in Zillah, WA and here in Coeur d’Alene, where she is a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Mabel was preceded in death by her brothers dark and Melvin, her sister Nelie and her oldest son Earl Hunter Jr. She is survived by her husband Earl, sons Ronald and Samuel and daughter Wanda as well as numerous grand children, great grand children and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled for January 19, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Coeur d’Alene Church of the Nazarene, 4000 N. 4th St. YATES FUNERAL HOMES has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements.
