Man shot, killed Sunday; possible relative taken into custody

Spokane sheriff’s deputies arrested a man in connection with a shooting death at his home early Sunday morning, a sheriff’s detective said.

Mark A. Cavazos, 52, was at the home when deputies arrived. Cavazos was taken downtown for questioning and was put into custody on a second-degree murder charge.

The death apparently stemmed from an argument. The victim’s name was not released. An autopsy was expected today to determine cause of death of the male victim, sheriff’s Detective Lt. Steve Barbieri said.

The 4 a.m. incident occurred in the 4000 block of Garfield Road, which is north of Airway Heights.

Deputies were still at the scene gathering evidence at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Sean Deitschman, a neighbor, said Cavazos was living a quiet life and caring for two grandchildren. Deitschman said he saw his neighbor out in the yard playing with them at times.

“I have no problem with him at all,” Deitschman said. “Nice guy. Nice family.”

Barbieri said two teenagers were away for the night and not at the home when the shooting occurred.

Barbieri said detectives believe the shooting stemmed from a domestic incident and that the victim may be a relative of Cavazos. The cause of the violence is under investigation, he said.
