Badgers down No. 2 Hoosiers for first place

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Ryan Evans had 13 points and seven rebounds, and Traevon Jackson added 11 points as Wisconsin upset No. 2 Indiana 64-59 on Tuesday night at Bloomington, Ind., to take sole possession of first place in the Big Ten.

The Badgers (13-4, 4-0 Big Ten) have won seven straight and beaten two Top 15 opponents in four days. They now have 11 straight wins over the Hoosiers (15-2, 3-1) and five straight in Bloomington.

Cody Zeller scored 18 of his 21 points in the first half to lead Indiana, which had a six-game winning streak and an 18-game home winning streak both end.

• St. John’s upsets Irish: JaKarr Sampson scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half and host St. John’s (10-7, 2-3 Big East) handed No. 20 Notre Dame (14-3, 2-2) its second straight loss, 67-63 at Madison Square Garden.

Chandler’s 3-pointer sinks Blazers in OT

NBA: Wilson Chandler hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 14.9 seconds remaining in overtime and the host Denver Nuggets beat the Portland Trail Blazers 115-111 for their season-best sixth consecutive victory.

Portland, which lost for the first time in six OT games this season, was led by LaMarcus Aldridge’s 28 points. Nicolas Batum had 22 points and J.J. Hickson 19.

• Crawford leads Clippers: Jamal Crawford scored a season-high 30 points, including 12 straight to start the fourth quarter, and the visiting Los Angeles Clippers looked just fine without Chris Paul in a 117-109 win over the struggling Houston Rockets, who lost their fourth straight.

The Clippers won their second game in a row despite missing their star point guard, who is day to day with a bruised right kneecap.

• Nets stay hot: Brook Lopez had 22 points and nine rebounds, Joe Johnson and Deron Williams each scored 21 points, and Brooklyn beat Toronto 113-106 to extend its season-high winning streak to seven games.

• Howard powers Lakers: Dwight Howard had 31 points and 16 rebounds, Kobe Bryant also scored 31 points and the host Los Angeles Lakers beat the Milwaukee Bucks 104-88 for their second straight win after a six-game skid.

Metta World Peace added 12 points for the Lakers.

• Love recovering: Minnesota’s Kevin Love is expected to return sometime in March after undergoing surgery on his broken right hand.

No. 24 Cyclones beat No. 16 Sooners

College women: Hallie Christofferson scored 24 points and Nikki Moody had 20 points and 13 assists Tuesday night to help No. 24 Iowa State beat No. 16 Oklahoma 82-61 at Ames, Iowa.

The Cyclones (13-2, 4-1) snapped Oklahoma’s six-game winning streak and pulled even with the Sooners for second place in the Big 12, a half-game behind No. 1 Baylor.

• Notre Dame wins 10th straight: Kayla McBride scored 17 points, and Skylar Diggins had 15 points and nine assists as second-ranked Notre Dame (15-1, 4-0 Big East) cruised to its 10th straight victory, a 79-64 victory over Georgetown (10-7, 1-3) at South Bend, Ind.

Soriano, Nats agree to $28 million deal

Baseball: Reliever Rafael Soriano and the Washington Nationals reached agreement pending a physical on a $28 million, two-year contract that includes $14 million in deferred money, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

Soriano, who turned 33 in December, had 42 saves and a 2.26 ERA for the A.L. East champion New York Yankees last year.

Michalczik hired as Arizona assistant

College football: Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez has added veteran college and NFL assistant Jim Michalczik to his staff as offensive line coach.

Michalczik, a former offensive lineman at Washington State, has 23 years of college and NFL experience, most recently serving as California’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach the past two years.

• Riley makes changes: Oregon State coach Mike Riley has promoted assistant head coach Jay Locey to chief of staff and graduate assistant Trent Bray to linebackers coach. Bray is a former all-state football player at Pullman High School.

McGinley named Ryder Cup captain

Golf: Paul McGinley is Europe’s captain for the 2014 Ryder Cup.

The Northern Irishman defeated Colin Montgomerie in a vote of the European Tour’s tournament committee.

Europe will defend the trophy at Gleneagles, Scotland.
