Short-handed Eagles beaten

Two starters sit out after auto accident
 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota defeated Eastern Washington 65-47 in a Big Sky Conference men’s basketball game on Thursday night with the visiting Eagles missing two players – senior starting guards Kevin Winford and Jeffrey Forbes – after an auto accident.

According to a school media release, the two were injured Wednesday in Grand Forks in an accident involving one of the team’s minivans.

The school said Winford suffered a concussion and Forbes a knee injury.

Troy Huff scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for North Dakota. Aaron Anderson added 17 points, six rebounds and six assists.

North Dakota (6-10, 3-4) shot only 28.1 percent in the first half and trailed 29-27 at halftime.

North Dakota began the second half with a 13-0 run, taking a 40-29 lead capped off by a dunk by Huff.

Venky Jois led Eastern Washington (4-13, 2-5) with 12 points and 14 rebounds, his eighth double-double of the season. He also had two blocks and two steals.

True freshman Daniel Hill started at point guard in place of Winford and went scoreless, but he had a season-high five assists, four rebounds and a steal.

Sophomore Parker Kelly came off the bench to add eight points and three rebounds.

Six-foot-10 center Martin Seiferth led the Eagles in scoring with 14 points and had nine rebounds and three blocked shots in just 26 minutes.

Seiferth made 6 of 7 shots from the field after entering the game leading the Big Sky Conference in field-goal percentage (64.9).
