Orange upset top-ranked Cardinals

College basketball: Brandon Triche scored 23 points and Michael Carter- Williams scored the final four points as No. 6 Syracuse rallied to upset No. 1 Louisville 70-68 on Saturday in a showdown of unbeaten Big East Conference teams in Louisville, Ky. It was the second straight Saturday No. 1 went down as Duke lost to then-No. 20 North Carolina State 84-76. Carter- Williams had 16 points, Jerami Grant and C.J. Fair both had 10 for the Orange (17-1, 5-0), winners of seven straight. Russ Smith’s 25 points led Louisville (16-2, 4-1).

• Michigan St. upends No. 11 Ohio St.: Keith Appling made two free throws with 7.9 seconds left and finished with 15 points to help No. 18 Michigan State beat Ohio State 59-56 in East Lansing, Mich. The Spartans (16-3, 5-1 Big Ten) have won five straight Big Ten games. Ohio State (13-4, 3-2) was playing for the first time since handing Michigan its only loss on Sunday.

• Wichita State shocks No. 12 Creighton: Carl Hall had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Malcolm Armstead hit two key free throws in the closing seconds to help Wichita State hold off Doug McDermott and No. 12 Creighton 67-64 in Wichita, Kan. Cleanthony Early added 13 points and Demetric Williams had 10 for the Shockers (17-2, 6-1 MVC). McDermott scored 25 points for the Bluejays (17-2, 6-1).

Blue Jackets get past Predators in shootout

NHL: Derick Brassard scored in the sixth round of a shootout, and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Nashville Predators 3-2 in Nashville, Tenn. Nashville’s David Legwand scored on a backhand in the third round to tie it up. Colin Wilson had a chance to tie it again after Brassard scored, but he missed off the post.

• Elsewhere: Jaromir Jagr scored two goals and assisted on the winner in his Dallas debut, and the Stars beat the visiting Phoenix Coyotes 4-3. Former Spokane Chief Ray Whitney, Phoenix’s leading scorer last season, scored a goal in the first game against his former team. … Martin St. Louis and Eric Brewer each scored two goals as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Washington Capitals 6-3 in Tampa, Fla. Joel Ward scored twice for the Caps.

Grizzlies beat weary Bulls in overtime

NBA: Marc Gasol scored 19 points, Zach Randolph had 13 points and 19 rebounds, and the Memphis Grizzlies beat the host Chicago Bulls 85-82 in overtime. Memphis scored the first six points of the extra period, Gasol’s putback making it 82-76. Chicago, playing its third consecutive overtime game in four days and this one without forward Luol Deng, had to fight back from a 17-point, third-quarter deficit.

• Elsewhere: Tony Parker had 23 points and 12 assists, and the visiting San Antonio Spurs held off the Atlanta Hawks 98-93 for their fourth straight victory. Matt Bonner added 17 points, and Kawhi Leonard and Tiago Splitter each had 14 for the Spurs. … Ersan Ilyasova scored 27 points and added 14 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Portland Trail Blazers 110-104 in Portland. Damian Lillard led Portland with 26 points and 10 assists.

• Mavs’ Marion fined $25,000: Dallas Mavericks forward Shawn Marion has been fined $25,000 by the NBA for publicly criticizing the officiating after the Mavericks’ 117-114 overtime loss to Oklahoma City on Friday.

Madden: Armstrong agent made offer

Cycling: The former chief of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency says a representative of Lance Armstrong’s offered the agency a donation in the range of $200,000 to $250,000 in 2004 and the agency immediately rejected it. Terry Madden, who led USADA from 2000-07, corroborated a story current CEO Travis Tygart told in an interview earlier this month. In his interview with Oprah Winfrey on Friday, Armstrong said no one in his camp made such an offer.

Tuel aids winning effort in NFLPA Bowl

Football: Former WSU quarterback Jeff Tuel went 8 for 8 passing for 63 yards and a touchdown and Kansas quarterback Dayne Crist threw for a touchdown and ran for another to lead the National to a 34-0 victory over the American at NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in Carson, Calif. The American squad fumbled seven times, turned it over five times, and didn’t cross midfield until late in the third quarter.

Real Sociedad drops ten-man Barcelona

Soccer: Ten-man Barcelona lost its first match of the Spanish league season, squandering a two-goal lead in a 3-2 defeat at Real Sociedad and allowing an injury-time winner. Barcelona set a league record by winning 18 games and one draw at the midpoint.

• Elsewhere: Manchester City kept up its pursuit of Manchester United with a 2-0 win over Fulham in London, with David Silva’s double reducing the champions’ deficit to four points in the English Premier League title race. … Liverpool thrashed Norwich 5-0, with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge both getting on the scoresheet at Liverpool, England. … Lazio missed the chance to draw level with Italian Serie A leader Juventus as it was held to 2-2 at struggling Palermo in Milan.

Stallings opens lead at Humana Challenge

Golf: Scott Stallings opened a five-stroke lead in the Humana Challenge in La Quinta, Calif., after shooting a 9-under 63 to reach 22-under 194 after three days. John Rollins was tied for second with Stewart Cink, Roberto Castro, Charles Howell III and Charley Hoffman at 17-under 199.

• Frost takes 2-stroke lead: David Frost shot a 65 to hold a two-stroke lead on John Cook after the second round of the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Kaupulehu- Kona, Hawaii. Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett was third, another two strokes back after a 68. Fred Couples and Tom Kite both shot 69s and were at 205.

Vonn skis to first victory in five weeks

Miscellany: Lindsey Vonn won a World Cup downhill for her first victory in more than five weeks after clocking 1 minute, 38.25 seconds down the Olympia delle Tofane course in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Current overall leader Tina Maze of Slovenia finished second, 0.43 seconds behind, and American Leanne Smith was third (0.89).

• Innerhofer wins downhill as Clarey sets record: Christof Innerhofer of Italy won the classic Lauberhorn downhill, and Johan Clarey of France set a World Cup speed record of 100.6 mph at Wengen, Switzerland. Innerhofer timed 2 minutes, 29.82 seconds down the 2.74-mile course. Klaus Kroell of Austria was second, 0.30 seconds behind, while teammate Hannes Reichelt was 0.76 back in third.

• Garcia beats Salido for WBO featherweight title: Mikey Garcia (31-0) won a unanimous decision over Orlando Salido (39-12-2) to take the WBO world featherweight title in New York. The fight was stopped after the eighth round when an accidental headbutt by Salido broke Garcia’s nose near the end of the round. Garcia won by scores of 79-70, 79-69 and 79-69.
