Adams leads five Eagles selected

College football: Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams received another major award.

Although he split time at quarterback, it was enough to impress the College Sporting News, which named him Freshman of the Year on the “Fabulous 50” Football Championship Subdivision All-America team.

Four other Eagles also were selected to the All-America squad – wide receiver Brandon Kaufman, offensive tackle Will Post, junior cornerback T.J. Lee and senior kicker Jimmy Pavel.

EWU had the most selections of any school.

Hodgins, Palmer receive honors

Women’s basketball: Eastern Washington’s Hayley Hodgins and Gonzaga’s Haiden Palmer were named players of the week in the Big Sky and West Coast conferences, respectively.

In her first two career starts, Hodgins, a redshirt freshman from Pasco, averaged 16.5 points per game, while shooting 71 percent from the field as EWU won home games against North Dakota and Northern Colorado.

Palmer received the WCC honor for the first time this season and second time in her career. She averaged 15.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.7 steals in a home win over BYU and road win over Portland.

Perfect Game tabs Gonzales

College baseball: Gonzaga junior Marco Gonzales continues to receive preseason accolades, being named to Perfect Game’s 2013 preseason All-America first-team Monday.

The pitcher-first baseman was also selected to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association to its 2013 Preseason All-America first-team.

Gonzales is coming off a sophomore campaign in which he went 8-2 with a 1.55 ERA on the mound and hit .325.

The southpaw, one of three finalists for The 2012 College Baseball Hall of Fame’s John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, appeared in 12 games for the Zags with three shutouts to go with 92 strikeouts. He led the WCC in ERA and tied for second in wins helping the club to a 34-22 record. Opposing batters hit only .201 off him with only 12 extra-base hits.
