Charges dropped against man accused of threatening rape during call

Charges were dropped Wednesday against a Montana man accused of threatening to rape the wives of a Spokane County sheriff’s detective and a deputy prosecutor. He made the threat during phone calls he knew were recorded at the Spokane County Jail.

Spokane City Prosecutor Ellen O’Hara, who was appointed to serve as special prosecutor, dismissed without comment two counts of intimidating a public servant and one count of witness tampering against Terrence D. Riley, 33.

Riley was acquitted last week of rendering criminal assistance during the Feb. 24, 2012, shooting that seriously injured a Spokane Valley man at the Oasis Tavern. A co-defendant, Jarrod E. Veilleux, was also acquitted of attempted murder and first-degree assault but was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Prior to that trial, Riley was recorded making references to raping Deputy Prosecutor Dale Nagy’s wife while his friends did the same to Detective Kirk Keyser’s wife.

Defense attorney Timothy Note said he thought O’Hara made the correct decision, but he declined to comment further.
