Trust women’s choices

“Trust women.” This is a button that was often worn by Dr. George Tiller, who was murdered by Scott Roeder for providing women with access to abortion.

On the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, it’s likely there will be much discussion about abortion. But I implore to do one thing when talking or thinking about abortion: Trust women.

If the fight for reproductive rights is about anything, it’s about bodily autonomy and the right of a woman to choose when and how she wants to have a baby. Since the decision was handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court, reproductive rights have been under constant attack. Whether it’s trying to mandate transvaginal ultrasounds or waiting periods for an abortion, there is a movement afoot to control the sexual and reproductive choices of women in this country. This is intolerable.

If we value women and believe they are equal partners in this play of life, we shouldn’t be questioning the sexual and reproductive choices they make. Only they know their circumstances. Only they know what’s in their heart. Respect that and allow them the same amount of individual autonomy and dignity you no doubt expect for yourself.
