Cougars post indoor track and field wins

The Washington State men’s and women’s track and field teams both came away with victories at the Cougar Indoor Invitational Saturday in Pullman.

The WSU men beat Idaho 96-25 and downed Montana 105-15. The Cougar women defeated Idaho 73-48 and topped Montana 92-31.

Three meet records were broken. WSU’s Todd Wakefield won the men’s mile in 4 minutes, 8.97 seconds, breaking Danny Wolf’s 10-year-old record time of 4:11.34.

Idaho’s Ben Ayesu-Attah and WSU’s Jacob Sealby both broke the men’s 400-meter dash record. Ayesu-Attah finished in 48.28 and Sealby was second in 48.29. The previous record of 48.46 was set by Sealby last year.

The WSU women’s 1,600-meter relay team of Bria’una Watley, Bree Winfrey, Dominique Keel and Shawna Fermin won in 3:46.07, breaking the record of 3:46.30 set by USC’s relay team in 2006.

WSU’s Jesse Jorgensen and Matthew Swanson finished first and second, respectively, in the men’s 800 meters.

The Cougar women took the top three spots in the 60-meter dash. Cindy Robinson was first in 7.62, Keel was second in 7.65 and Fermin was third in 7.66.

The Idaho men’s and women’s teams claimed victories over Montana.

• Seven Eastern Washington University athletes qualified for the Big Sky Conference Championships at two different meets – the Montana State Open in Bozeman and the University of Washington Invitational in Seattle.

The EWU women’s 1,600-meter relay team won in Bozeman in a time of 3:50.12. The time was the second-best in school history.

Also in Bozeman, EWU’s Cody Fishel and Thomas Kassa qualified by clearing 6 feet, 6¾ inches in the high jump. Fishel took first place while Kassa’s personal-best earned him a third-place finish.

Elise Jepsen had a qualifying mark of 5-5 in the high jump.

Also reaching qualifying marks for the Eagles were Vince Hamilton and Chris Schroll (5,000 meters), Michael Okoro (200 meters) and Nick Stearns (pole vault).

Wrestling

North Idaho topped Northwest College 27-12 at the Apodaca Dual Showdown in Powell, Wyo.

Caleb Rivera recorded the Cardinals’ lone pin, taking down Northwest College’s Braden Gibson in 2:13 at 184 pounds.
