Michigan makes case for No. 1 ranking

Men’s basketball: Trey Burke scored 19 points and No. 2 Michigan (19-1, 6-1 Big Ten) never trailed after the opening minutes of a 74-60 win over Illinois (15-6, 2-5) in Champaign, Ill., that could push the Wolverines to No. 1 in the nation for the first time since the 1992-93 season.

Duke’s lopsided loss to Miami earlier in the week opened the door for a new No. 1 when the AP poll comes out today – and Michigan put itself in position to take the top spot.

Glenn Robinson III scored 14 points for the Wolverines. Nik Stauskas and Tim Hardaway Jr. added 12 each.

• Hurricanes continue sweep of success: Trey McKinney Jones scored 15 points for the Miami Hurricanes, and the Atlantic Coast Conference leaders won their seventh game in a row by beating Florida State, 71-47.

The blowout victory before a capacity home crowd was the second in a row for the 25th-ranked Hurricanes (15-3, 6-0), ensuring a significant jump in today’s poll. They drubbed No. 1 Duke on Wednesday.

Miami is off to its best start in the conference, alone atop the standings, and is 9-0 at home. Florida State (11-8, 3-3) fell to 0-3 this season against ranked teams.

• Hoosiers handle Spartans: Victor Oladipo scored 21 points, grabbed seven rebounds and finished with six steals, leading No. 7 Indiana (18-2, 6-1 Big Ten) to a 75-70 victory over No. 13 Michigan State (17-4, 6-2).

Michigan State was led by Gary Harris, Indiana’s 2012 Mr. Basketball, who had 21 points and made five 3-pointers.

Iowa earns upset over No. 23 Michigan

Women’s basketball: Iowa avenged a Jan. 6 loss to No. 23 Michigan (16-4, 5-2 Big Ten) as the Hawkeyes (16-5, 5-1) beat the Wolverines 63-57 in Ann Arbor, Mich., getting 19 points from Bethany Doolittle.

Doolittle hit 9 of 15 from the floor as Iowa drained 46 percent (23 of 50) of its shots. Jaime Printy pitched in 14 points.

• No. 15 Purdue tops Michigan State in OT: Drey Mingo had 22 points and 10 rebounds and No. 15 Purdue (17-3, 6-1 Big Ten) held on for a 67-62 overtime win over No. 25 Michigan State (16-4, 4-3) in East Lansing, Mich.

Anthony hits nine 3s in win over Hawks

NBA: Carmelo Anthony tied a franchise record with nine 3-pointers, then converted a go-ahead, three-point play with 12.5 seconds left to cap a 42-point night and lead the New York Knicks to a 106-104 victory over the visiting Atlanta Hawks.

The Hawks shot a season-high 60 percent from the field but had their three-game winning streak snapped when Josh Smith missed a 3-pointer on Atlanta’s final possession.

• Bryant helps Lakers hold off Thunder: Kobe Bryant had 21 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds, Steve Nash added seven of his 17 points in the final 5 1/2 minutes, and the Los Angeles Lakers held off the Oklahoma City Thunder 105-96 at home.

Kevin Durant scored 35 points and Russell Westbrook had 17 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds for the road-weary Thunder, who finished their longest trip of the season at 3-3.

Chicago tops Detroit, improves to 6-0

NHL: Nick Leddy scored 2:45 into overtime and the Blackhawks improved to 6-0 – the best start in franchise history – with a 2-1 win over the visiting Detroit Red Wings.

The Blackhawks killed all six of the Red Wings’ power plays.

Detroit’s Johan Franzen connected early in the third to tie the game at 1 and set up OT.

• Penguins edge Senators in shootout: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and James Neal scored in the shootout to give the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins a 2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators.

Colin Greening scored a second-period goal for the Senators, and Jason Spezza and Kyle Turris beat Marc-Andre Fleury in the shootout. But Milan Michalek was stopped with Ottawa’s first attempt.

• Markov lifts Canadiens over Devils in OT: Andrei Markov scored 4:22 into overtime on a power play as the Canadiens recovered from blowing a two-goal lead to defeat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 in Montreal.

The Canadiens took a 3-1 lead early in the third period, but David Clarkson scored on a power play and Dainius Zubrus tied the game at 13:02. Patrick Elias also scored.

• Jets rally past Islanders: Evander Kane scored 1:59 into overtime to give the Jets a 5-4 come-from-behind victory against the New York Islanders in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Kane, who also had an assist, tapped the puck in past goalie Evgeni Nabokov after a rebound from a long Olli Jokinen shot.

• Capitals net first win of season: Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season and the Washington Capitals became the last NHL team to get a win, beating the visiting Buffalo Sabres 3-2.

Joel Ward had a goal and an assist, John Erskine also scored, and Michal Neuvirth made 22 saves for the Capitals, who had opened with four consecutive losses for the first time since the 1993-94 season.

• Flyers send Laughton to minors: The Philadelphia Flyers are sending first-round draft pick Scott Laughton back to the minors.

Laughton, a center taken 20th overall by Philadelphia in the 2012 amateur draft, was pointless in five games with the Flyers.

Woods on track for win at Torrey Pines

Golf: Everything became perfectly clear at Torrey Pines. Tiger Woods was on his game and headed to yet another win.

Tiger Woods seized control in the fog-delayed Farmers Insurance Open with a 3-under 69 and a four-shot lead after the third round. He stretched his lead to six shots through seven holes when the final round at Torrey Pines in San Diego was suspended by darkness.

Woods was at 17-under par for the tournament.

Defending champion Brandt Snedeker was 4 under through 13 holes of the final round and he was not making up much ground on Woods. Snedeker was at 11 under, along with Nick Watney, who was through eight holes.

First-timer wins Miami Marathon

Miscellany: Running his first marathon, Luis Rivero Gonzalez of Guatemala won the Miami Marathon.

Rivero, a professional runner for more than two years, had a time of 2:26:14. David Tuwei of Kenya finished second at 2:28:15.

Mariska Kramer of the Netherlands won the women’s title in 2:46:07. Tezata Dengersa of Ethiopia was second in 2:48:43.

• Sounders bring back Neagle: Midfielder Lamar Neagle has been reacquired by Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders from the Montreal Impact for an international roster spot through the end of the 2014 season.

Neagle, 25, played for Seattle in 2009 and 2011.
