Obituary: Smick, Howard Edward “Tony”

Age 93

SMICK, Howard Edward “Tony” Long time Colfax resident, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane.

He was 93.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, January 30th at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax.

Burial with military honors will follow at the Colfax Cemetery.

Tony was born November 27, 1919 in Endicott to Edward and Mary Schierman Schmick.

He was raised in the Endicott area and graduated from high school there in 1938.

Tony worked in Endicott until enlisting in the U.S. Army May 28, 1942.

He married Phyllis Anderson in Reno, Nevada on August 1, 1942.

Tony was honorably discharged from the military January 10, 1946.

He and Phyllis moved to Burley, Idaho where Tony worked for Garrett Freight Lines until 1949 when they moved to Colfax.

He began working for the ASC (Conservation) Office at that time and retired as executive director of that office in 1979.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott, a longtime member of both the Colfax Eagles and Colfax Elks Lodges; serving as Past Worthy President and Past Exalted Ruler respectively.

Tony was a 60+ year member of the American Legion and Past Commander and he was also a member of the North-South Palouse Grange.

He was an avid card player and would get together with friends every afternoon to play.

Tony was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis in 1987.

His parents and a brother Leon Smick also preceded him in death.

Tony will be missed by longtime friend and neighbor Allen McSweeney of Colfax as well as many other friends and acquaintances.

Memorial gifts may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott, the Whitman Hospital Foundation or the Union Gospel Mission.
