Eagles hand Scotties first defeat

Lakeside handed Freeman a rare loss Tuesday night at Freeman.

Ashley Cook-Cox scored 11 points and Jenna Widman added 10 as the Eagles (15-4, 9-2) built an 11-point first-half lead and held on late to beat the Scotties 46-39 in the second-to-last Northeast A League game of the season for both teams.

The loss was the first for Freeman (18-1, 10-1) since losing to Okanogan in last year’s State 1A title game.

The Scotties went 27-1 in 2010-11, winning the state title.

Molly McIntyre scored 17 points and Katie Vold added 11, but Freeman couldn’t dig itself out of a 22-11 first-half hole.

The Scotties can still wrap up the NEA title with a win Friday at Riverside. They beat the Rams by 50 points on Jan. 11.

Medical Lake 55, Chewelah 40: The Cardinals (8-12, 4-8) made five 3-pointers in an 18-0 run to start the game and went on to beat the host Cougars (6-13, 2-9). Kelby Wegner hit three 3-pointers during that run and finished with a game-high 20 points. Cassidy Hagel added 19 for Medical Lake. Chewelah trailed by 19 points at the half, but the cut the deficit to four with a 19-5 third-quarter run. Medical Lake responded with a 19-9 fourth-quarter run to seal the win. Kaitlin Krouse led the Cougars with 11 points.

Riverside 45, Kettle Falls 41: The Rams (10-8, 6-5) stormed back in the fourth quarter and beat the host Bulldogs (7-12, 2-9). Courtney Davis scored 16 points and Miranda LaJiness added 11 for Riverside, which outscored Kettle Falls 20-4 in the fourth to erase a 12-point third-quarter deficit. Josie Stanard scored 12 points, Kourtney Keenan had 11 and Randi Goodnight chipped in 10 for Kettle Falls.

Great Northern

West Valley 46, Colville 32: Erin Higbie scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Eagles (12-5, 8-1) built an early 10-point advantage and beat the visiting Indians (9-8, 5-4). McKenna Cabbage tallied eight points for Colville, but the Indians dug themselves a hole with just three first-quarter points.

East Valley 64, Cheney 40: The Knights (13-5, 7-3) erupted after halftime and cruised past the visiting Blackhawks (6-11, 3-7). Erin Wallman led a balanced scoring attack for East Valley with nine points. The Knights outscored Cheney 20-4 in the third quarter after trailing by a point at the half. Coreen Labish had 19 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks for Cheney.

Clarkston 60, Deer Park 33: Jaclyn Meyers scored 15 points and Janey Reeves added 14 points and five assists as the Bantams (4-13, 2-7) routed the visiting Stags (0-18, 0-10). Ciera Sitton made four 3-pointers and finished with 19 points for Deer Park.

Northeast 1B North

Selkirk 58, Cusick 57: Katie Couch made three free throws with 1.4 seconds left to give the Rangers (8-10, 5-7) an upset win over the host Panthers (18-2, 10-2). Couch connected on 22 of 24 free throws – including 18 of 19 in the fourth quarter – and finished with 37 points, 24 rebounds and seven steals for Selkirk. The Rangers earned a spot in the postseason with the win.

Republic 73, Curlew 27: Kacie Lane scored 22 points and Demi Jo Vaughn added 17 as the Tigers (15-4, 10-2) routed the host Cougars (5-12, 3-9). Lindsey Gibson tallied a team-high 11 points for Curlew, which struggled with Republic’s pressure defense.

Northeast 1B South

Wilbur-Creston 43, Wellpinit 34 (OT): Brianne Goodlake scored seven of the Wildcats nine points in overtime as Wilbur-Creston (16-4, 8-2) finished in second place in league with a win over the host Redskins (10-10, 6-4). Dani Flett scored 11 points and Imani Antone dished out seven assists for Wellpinit.

St. Michael’s 54, Valley Christian 45: Macaela Shelley scored 18 points and Bella Durazo added six steals and six assists as the Warriors (4-15, 2-7) beat the visiting Panthers (1-17, 1-9). Lindy Riggan and Emily Walzer combined for 33 points for Valley Christian.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 51, Odessa-Harrington 28: Allison Fox scored 14 points and Kinzie Ashley added 10 as the Warriors (14-5, 9-0) overcame a slow start and routed the host Titans (5-15, 3-7). ACH trailed 10-4 after the first quarter, but took control with an 18-4 second-quarter run. Chelsea Fisher led Odessa-Harrington with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Southeast 1B

Tekoa-Oakesdale 48, Rosalia 39: Mattie Jo Johnson and Alexandria Overton led a balanced scoring attack with nine points apiece and the Nighthawks (15-3, 11-3) held on late to beat the visiting Spartans (10-8, 7-7). Tekoa-Oakesdale built a nine-point lead in the first half and held Rosalia at bay after halftime. Mackenzie Reddish made 12 of 14 free throws and finished with 31 points for the Spartans.

St. John-Endicott 67, LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus 13: Gretchan Van Lith scored 19 points and Gracie Dickerson added eight points and 11 rebounds as the Eagles (14-4, 11-3) overwhelmed the visiting Tigercats (0-18, 0-14). Emily Jones added 10 points for St. John-Endicott, which won the rebounding battle 32-17 and forced 26 Tigercats turnovers.

North Star

Wallace 45, Lakeside 44: Jordan Browning made two free throws with no time remaining to give the Miners (9-8, 4-0) a win over the Knights (11-8, 3-1) in Plummer. Emily Nelson and Stephanie Hill scored 12 points apiece and Browning added 10 for Wallace, which held on in the second half after built a 14-point halftime lead. Christina Nilson tallied a game-high 15 points for Lakeside.
