Lake City’s Casey Stangel national player of the year
The postseason honors continue to come in for standout softball player Casey Stangel.
The Lake City High graduate has been named MaxPreps.com’s National High School Softball Player of the Year.
Stangel, who is headed to the University of Missouri, led Lake City to a 28-0 season that culminated in a state championship. She finished the season with a .640 batting average, driving in 64 runs with 33 extra base hits to go with 15 home runs. She was the pitcher of record in all 28 games, striking out 208 in 143 innings with a 0.73 ERA. She was named the most valuable player of the Inland Empire League for a fourth straight year.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better athlete to come through our program and help get it to where it’s at,” Lake City coach Laura Tolzmann told MaxPreps.com. “She left her mark, and it’s been an awesome example for underclassmen to have similar goals and to keep the tradition going.”
Earlier this month, Stangel was selected the Gatorade Idaho Player of the Year for a third straight season.
She finished with a 3.66 grade-point average.
Resignation
Shawna Neale has resigned as athletic director at Colfax after two years.
“It is with no hard feelings or conflicts but rather I just needed to make a change to better suit my family’s needs,” Neale said in an email announcing her resignation.
No replacement has been named.
Cheney names coach
Chris Dunn, a Shadle Park graduate, has been hired as head boys basketball coach at Cheney, replacing Joel Soter who resigned to take a similar job at Rogers.
Dunn most recently has been a head track coach at Riverside along with serving as an assistant basketball and football coach. He teaches math at Rogers.
He coached the Riverside boys track team to a Northeast A League championship and fourth place finish at state this spring.
Golf
It was close but no cigar for Derek Bayley of Rathdrum at the recent USGA Junior qualifier at Manito Country Club.
Bayley fired rounds of 68 and 69 to finish at 5 under par, one stroke behind winner Patrick Murphy of Canada. Just the winner earned a berth to the USGA Junior tournament next month in California. Bayley qualified for the tourney last year in New Hampshire.
Bayley gave himself a chance in his fine round when he birdies holes 10, 11, 12, 14 and 17 before finishing with a bogie on 18.
Fourteen other area boys competed in the qualifier at Manito. They were: Eric Ansett of Spokane (69-71), Joseph Baldeck of Clarkston (74-72), Tanner Comes of Spokane (72-74), Michael Baldeck of Clarkston (73-75), Michael Brutocao of Spokane (74-78), Blake Ellingsen of Spokane (74-79), Stephen Roller of Hayden (80-80), Kenny Dodge of Post Falls (84-77), Matthew Heckel of Spokane (75-87), Ryan Maine of Spokane (82-81), Ben Gleason of Lewiston (84-80), Jack Plaster of Spokane (85-84), Trevor Fedele of Post Falls (87-88) and Preston Roth of Rathdrum (92-93).
Lacrosse
Simon Fraser University men’s coach Brent Hoskins has announced area players selected to the Burnaby Mountain Select teams this summer.
They are: Brock Dineen of Liberty Lake (Gonzaga Prep), Matthew Pennell of Nine Mile Falls (Lakeside), Cian Peterson of Spokane (G-Prep), Jarrett Polivema of Spokane (Mingus Union) and John Stone of Spokane (G-Prep).
