City will host second hearing on food trucks

The city of Spokane will host a second public hearing on the rules governing food trucks.

Proposed changes to city laws would allow mobile food vendors as a permitted use in zones that currently allow retail. Mobile vendors would have to register each year with the city and get a permit.

The regulations will also identify the rules for vending on public rights of way and on private parcels. City planners said they wanted to create an easier, consistent and more predictable system for entrepreneurs.

The city plan commission held a public hearing May 22 and will take more public comments next Wednesday. The hearing starts at 4 p.m. in the City Council chambers, City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.

Kitchen Engine hosts classes

The family-owned Kitchen Engine has announced its latest lineup of classes, including some new baking classes featuring Amy Juran, pastry chef and baker at Chaps.

Juran will teach hands-on classes for artisan breads, introduction to yeast breads and pastry classes.

There are many other classes taught by local chefs and cooks at The Kitchen Engine, including artisan pizza, cooking with tofu, gnocchi, sushi, Vietnamese wraps, handmade pasta and tamales. Hands-on classes are limited to 10 people and are $45 to $49 per person. The store also offers presentation-style classes that are $39 per person.

Dishcrawl Spokane debuts

Dishcrawl Spokane will host its first event on July 10.

The company will lead a traveling feast at four restaurants in the heart of downtown Spokane. The progressive, prix fixe dinner will include an appetizer, two entrees and a dessert. The theme is “Around the World,” but that is all organizers will reveal. The participating restaurants are kept secret until two days before the event, when the first location is revealed to ticket holders. Tickets are $45 each and can be purchased at dishcrawl.com/spokane. Drinks are not included with the dinner.

Dishcrawl events are also offered in San Francisco, New York, Montreal, Ottawa, San Jose, Toronto, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., among other cities.
