Bryans move to Wimbledon final

TENNIS: Mike and Bob Bryan moved a win away from their fourth straight major title — the “Bryan Slam” — with a five-set victory over Rohan Bopanna and Edouard Roger-Vasselin at Wimbledon on Thursday.

The Americans have won a record 14 Grand Slam tournaments. If they get the 15th this week, they’ll become the first team in the Open era to hold all four major titles at the same time.

They had two match points in the fourth set, but couldn’t convert. But they broke Bopanna in the first game of the fifth set, when Roger-Vasselin popped up Mike Bryan’s low return and Bob Bryan put it away.

The 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory extended the Bryans’ winning streak to 23 matches.

The Bryans’ opponents in Saturday’s final will be Croatia’s Ivan Dodig and Brazil’s Marcelo Melo.

Giroux agrees to 8-year extension

NHL: A person familiar with the negotiations says Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux has agreed to an eight-year contract extension.

Giroux is entering the final year of his contract. The Flyers top play-making offensive threat, he’s a two-time 25-goal scorer. He had 13 goals and 35 assists for 48 points in 48 games last season.

Overall, he has 291 points (91 goals, 200 assists) in 333 career games spread over six seasons in Philadelphia.

Also, Paul MacLean, the NHL’s coach of the year, has signed a three-year extension with the Ottawa Senators.

MacLean won the Jack Adams Award this past season as the league’s top coach after leading the Senators to a 25-17-6 record after the NHL lockout.
