Judge sets $1 million bond for murder suspect

A district court judge has set a $1 million bond for Issiah L. Schauman, the 19-year-old suspected of first-degree murder. It’s been almost a month since prosecutors say Schauman shot 27-year-old Fabian McBride to death outside the victim’s home on 7005 N. Atlantic St. McBride’s family and friends crowded Judge Randy Brandt’s courtroom Thursday, crying and comforting each other. Family members declined to comment on Schauman’s arrest. Two witnesses to the shooting, Thomas Wilson and Danniane Feist, were walking with McBride from his home when they saw Schauman drive up in a Chrysler New Yorker, according to an affidavit. McBride approached the vehicle to confront Schauman, who he thought had stolen property from a neighbor several days before, according to the affidavit. Schauman pulled out a gun and pointed it at McBride, shooting several times, the affadavit says. Schauman fled, and McBride was later pronounced dead at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. Schauman was extradited to Spokane on Wednesday after he turned himself in at the Pierce County Jail in Tacoma on June 28. Schauman was in District Court to allow more time for police to investigate the shooting, said Jack Driscoll, chief criminal deputy prosecutor for Spokane County. It usually takes up to a month for cases from District Court to appear before a Superior Court judge.
