In brief: Sacre re-signs with the Lakers

NBA: The Los Angeles Lakers have re-signed 7-foot center Robert Sacre.

He started three of 32 games for the team last season, averaging 1.3 points and 1.1 rebounds. Sacre also spent time with the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA’s D-League during his rookie season.

He was selected by the Lakers in the second round of last year’s NBA draft out of Gonzaga.

Sacre finished his career with the Bulldogs ranked second in school history with 186 blocked shots while averaging 9.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 135 games. As a senior, he was named the 2012 WCC Defensive Player of the Year and was an All-WCC First-Team selection.

Whitworth picks Hall class

College: Whitworth University has selected Michael Allan, Tom Dodd and Bill Robinson to comprise the 24th induction class of the Heritage Gallery Hall of Fame, the school announced Wednesday.

Allan, a standout tight end for the Pirates football team, finished his career with school records for individual season touchdown receptions (15 in 2005) and career touchdown receptions (29).

Dodd coached Whitworth swimming for 16 seasons (1987-2003), earning NAIA Men’s Coach of the Year honors in 1996 after leading the Pirates to a runner-up finish at the national championships.

Robinson served as the 17th President in Whitworth history from 1993-2010.

The class of 2013 will join a group of 77 individuals and eight teams already enshrined in the Heritage Gallery during a 9 a.m. ceremony on Oct. 5.

Cheney set for annual rodeo

Rodeo: The 46th annual Cheney Rodeo takes place this weekend at Bi-Mart Arena with performances Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

The rodeo features most of the top cowboys and cowgirls in the Columbia River Circuit for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
