Everything from Poison to Mozart, poetry to ‘Pacific Rim’
This is the week of the year when we have no excuse. There’s simply too much going on to stay at home.
You like festivals? There are festivals – the KYRS Music Fest in Peaceful Valley and the Wallace Blues Festival in the Silver Valley, Chataqua in Chewelah and Spirit Fest in Riverfront Park.
Like rock concerts? There are concerts from terrific touring acts – Jonny Lang, Candlebox, Postal Service, the Dirty Heads, Ratt and Poison – and local favorites the Terrible Buttons and Nixon Rodeo, both releasing new CDs, and Allen Stone doing a homecoming show at Chataqua in Chewelah.
Fine art more your game? Take an art walk in Coeur d’Alene tonight. Mozart on a Summer’s Eve gives you two chances in the coming week to catch classical music performed in a beautiful outdoor setting by world-class musicians. Coeur d’Alene’s favorite Oscar-winner Patty Duke takes to the stage at the Bing in a reading of “The Giver,” based on Lois Lowry’s popular children’s novel. The Idaho Panhandle, meanwhile, is sporting two classic children’s stories adapted for the stage: “Mary Poppins” at Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre and “The Wizard of Oz” by Sandpoint OnStage. Farther south, the University of Idaho gets Shakespearean with a production of “The Merry Wives of Windsor.”
Like to play with words? Head to Auntie’s Bookstore to hear the best from Spokane’s thriving slam poetry scene as they raise funds to compete in the National Poetry Slam in Boston later this summer.
And we haven’t even gotten to the movies yet. “Pacific Rim” offers lots of visual thrills and fanboy geek fun, while “A Band Called Death” takes an interesting look at Death, an African-American punk band (yes, you read that correctly) from the 1970s. Personally, I don’t expect much from “Grown Ups 2,” but the first one was a hit and I’m sure it’ll have its fans.
