In brief: Council candidate forum set at grange

ROCKFORD – A primary election candidate forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the McIntosh Grange at 319 S. First St. in Rockford.

One Rockford City Council seat will be on the ballot in August: Chuck Collison and Robert Tollefson are challenging appointed incumbent Larry Van Every for Position 5.

Rockford residents are encouraged to attend the forum and ask questions of the candidates.

The county will mail ballots next week. The two candidates who get the most votes will advance to the general election in November.

City budget hearing scheduled Tuesday

LIBERTY LAKE – The city of Liberty Lake will hold a public hearing on the proposed 2014 budget during the council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Public comment will be taken during the meeting at City Hall, 22710 E. Country Vista Drive.

Nielsen new chief for Fire District 8

SPOKANE COUNTY – Tony Nielsen has been named fire chief of Spokane County Fire District 8, which begins at the southern boundaries of Spokane and Spokane Valley.

Nielsen has been serving as acting chief since former Fire Chief Bill Walkup retired in May.

Nielsen has worked for the district on and off since 1984 when he was an Explorer volunteer cadet. He left in 1987 to work in Kootenai County, returning to District 8 in 1989 as a resident firefighter. He worked at the Port Angeles Fire Department from 1991 to 2003, after which he returned to District 8 as the training division chief. He was serving as the deputy chief of operations when he was promoted to acting chief.

The public is invited to attend a badge pinning ceremony Monday at 7 p.m. at Fire Station 82, 12100 E. Palouse Highway.
