Obituary: Schanz, Dell Ray

Age 72

SCHANZ, Dell Ray March 7, 1941 - July 3, 2013 Dell let us all say our tearful goodbyes, and then drifted away into the light in the early morning hours.

He was born in Billings, Montana, the first child of Nick and Alma (Witkauckas) Schanz.

Dell graduated from Central Valley High School in 1959.

He was a graduate of North Idaho College, Eastern Washington University and received his Master’s degree from the University of Idaho.

His military career was spent in the Coast Guard.

Dell spent most of his professional career helping the disabled.

He began as a Speech and Hearing Therapist at Lakeland Village, and then on to the Monroe School District.

Upon returning to the Spokane area, he worked at Prevocational Training Center, and was the Director of Special Education at Bonner County School District in Sandpoint, Idaho for over 15 years.

He then was a Special Ed Consultant in Washington.

He resided in the Spokane Valley for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara, sons Christopher from Spokane, and Matthew (Deniece) from Colville, grandson Dylan and granddaughter, Emma, brother Dan (Louise) and sister Carole Swanson, sister-in-law Mary Whiting (Gene) and brother-in-law, Bill Simons, a niece and two nephews.

There will be no Funeral Service at Dell’s request.

The family has planned a Memorial Gathering at Darcy’s Restaurant on July 27th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or Hutton Settlement.
