Student-athletes deserve help in pursuing dreams

We would like to acknowledge your positive articles that feature local high school student-athletes. As longtime area educators, we are very aware of the outstanding contributions young people constantly make to their families, schools and communities. Though the general public doesn’t always see this, the media can often help paint a different picture.

A few months ago you featured track athlete Carson Murray from Rogers High School. Our Foundation’s president, Larry Moran, was so moved by the article that he contacted Tim Wood, athletic director at Rogers, and set into motion a partnership with the school to provide assistance to deserving students and programs. Meeting Carson was a joy, as he best represents everything positive about Spokane’s youth. He’s hardworking, bright and humble, and leads by example. His stellar feats in track are matched by his work in the classroom.

It’s through positive articles like this that the good people in the Inland Northwest blessed with resources might be motivated to contribute to our youth achieving their dreams. While overcoming significant challenges, Murray will be attending the University of Washington to study international studies as a Gates scholarship winner. He plans on attending Georgetown University for his graduate work.

This is a call to other individuals, organizations and businesses to support and mentor students in The Spokesman Review readership area. We feel that with success in life comes an obligation to give back to our children. Our young people and our schools need help. Let’s all get involved.
