Japan tops U.S. for gold at World Cup
Softball: Yuki Hayashi went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Japan beat the United States 6-3 on Sunday night in Oklahoma City to win the gold medal in the eighth World Cup of Softball, ending the long reign of the Americans in the international event.
Lauren Gibson homered for the U.S., which had won the last six World Cups since Japan took the inaugural event in 2005. That also was the last time the U.S. lost twice in the World Cup.
Earlier in the day, Amber Freeman hit a pair of two-run homers as United States advanced to the gold-medal game with a 10-3 win over Puerto Rico in five innings.
Mexico into Gold Cup quarterfinals
Soccer: Marco Fabian and Luis Montes scored goals 13 minutes apart in the first half and Mexico defeated Martinique 3-1 in Denver in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Miguel Ponce scored for Mexico (2-1-0, Pool A) in the 90th minute to secure the win.
Mexico moved to the quarterfinals with the win.
Kevin Parsemain scored for Martinique (1-2-0, Pool A).
• Panama, Canada play to draw: Panama missed a chance to finish group play with a perfect record, playing winless Canada to a 0-0 tie in Denver in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Panama (2-0-1, Pool A) had already secured a berth in the quarterfinals with wins over Mexico and Martinique.
Canada (0-2-1, Pool A) was eliminated after failing to score a goal in any of its three games.
• Bayern secures transfer of Alcantara: Bayern Munich secured the transfer of midfielder Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona.
Barcelona said Bayern had agreed to pay $32.75 million for 22-year-old Thiago. The deal also included an agreement to play an exhibition between the clubs at some point in the next four years.
Bayern said that Thiago will sign a four-year contract that will cost the German club $26.2 million after proceeds from the exhibition and an agreement to forego some payments.
Mahut holds off Hewitt in Newport
Tennis: Nicolas Mahut of France captured the title at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, R.I., beating Lleyton Hewitt of Australia 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.
Mahut advanced to the final by beating American Michael Russell 6-2, 6-2 in a morning semifinal that had been postponed from Saturday because of rain.
Also earlier in the day, two-time defending champion John Isner was ousted by No. 4 seed Hewitt 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Marquez wins German MotoGP
Miscellany: Marc Marquez of Spain held on to win at the German MotoGP in Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Germany, taking a two point lead in the championship series.
The Honda rider started from pole and took the lead for good on the fifth lap, taking advantage of the absence of defending champion Jorge Lorenzo and previous points leader Dani Pedrosa who were ahead of him in the standings. Both were hurt in practice and couldn’t race.
• Florida motorcyclist killed in crash: Officials say a Florida motorcycle racer trying to top 300 mph died after losing control and crashing at an annual speed trial event in Limestone, Maine.
Race director Tim Kelly says 44-year-old Bill Warner of Wimauma, Fla., was clocked at 285 mph before he lost control. He says Warner was conscious and talking as he was taken from the scene but died later at a hospital.
• Broncos sign Clady: The Denver Broncos locked up left tackle Ryan Clady, a first-round draft pick out of Boise State in 2008, with a five-year deal worth up to $57.5 million.
Had Clady not signed by today, he would have played under a one-year, $9.823 million deal because of the franchise tag.
• Pacers announce Copeland signing: The Indiana Pacers have officially announced the signing of free-agent forward Chris Copeland, who spent last season with the New York Knicks.
