Heat use amnesty clause on Miller to save on luxury tax

NBA: The Miami Heat are designating Mike Miller as their amnesty player, a move that may save more than $30 million in luxury tax payments over the next two years.

Miller spent three seasons in Miami, helping the Heat win two titles and playing big roles in each playoff run.

Miller said he understands the move, though he’s disappointed to leave a championship club.

Around the league: The Bucks waived forward Drew Gooden and designated him as their amnesty player. … Mavericks rookie guard Shane Larkin has undergone surgery to repair his broken right ankle. … The Nuggets hired Arturas Karnisovas to serve as assistant general manager. … The Spurs agreed to a two-year contract with forward Jeff Pendergraph. The 6-foot-9 Pendergraph spent the past two seasons at Indiana, mostly in a reserve role.

Bengals give DE Dunlap five-year contract extension

NFL: The Cincinnati Bengals have signed defensive end Carlos Dunlap to a five-year contract extension worth $40 million.

The 6-foot-6, 280-pound Dunlap is a fourth-year pro from Florida. He had 55 tackles and six sacks in 14 games last season.

Burnett locked up by Packers: The Packers have locked up another defensive starter, signing safety Morgan Burnett to a long-term extension.

In three seasons with the Packers, Burnett has 244 tackles and six interceptions.

Younger Staal signs deal with Hurricanes

NHL: The Carolina Hurricanes have signed right wing Jared Staal to a one-year contract.

The 22-year-old Staal is the younger brother of team captain Eric Staal and forward Jordan Staal.

Around the league: The Kings acquired forward Daniel Carcillo in a trade with the Blackhawks. … The Red Wings agreed to a two-year contract with defenseman Brendan Smith. … Left wing Dustin Penner is headed to Anaheim on a one-year contract.

Colorado backup QB transferring for hoops

Colleges: Colorado quarterback Shane Dillon plans to transfer to another school to play basketball.

Dillon is a redshirt freshman and is listed as a backup on the Buffaloes’ depth chart behind junior Connor Wood.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Dillon was recruited as a basketball player out of Christian High School in El Cajon, Calif.

UCLA forward has surgery: Forward Wanaah Bail is expected to miss four months as he recovers from knee surgery, although the freshman’s eligibility with UCLA for the upcoming basketball season is unknown.

The 6-foot-9 forward from Houston signed a financial aid agreement in June declaring his intent to attend UCLA. He had been attending summer classes while working with new Bruins coach Steve Alford to prepare for the season.

Serena Williams rolls to win at Swedish Open

Miscellany: Top-ranked Serena Williams advanced to the second round of the Swedish Open by beating Sesil Karatancheva of Kazakhstan 6-1, 6-2 at Bastad, Sweden.

Third-seeded Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic, sixth-seeded Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine, Mathilda Johansson of France and Teliana Pereira of Brazil also advanced.

Hingis will play doubles: Tennis Hall of Famer Martina Hingis plans to come out of retirement and play doubles at the Southern California Open.

Hingis will play with Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.

The 32-year-old Hingis will be making her first WTA tournament appearance since September 2007.

Langhorne leads Mystics: Crystal Langhorne had 13 points and nine rebounds, and the Washington Mystics held visiting San Antonio without a point for more than nine minutes in the second half to complete a two-game sweep of the Silver Stars with an 86-64.
